what is push polling?

It's where people call you under the guise of conducting a poll but their real purpose is to spread negative messages about a particular candidate. The questions are usually couched in terms such as "Would you vote for candidate X If you knew that he did Y."

For example, a question could be something like "Would you vote for Mitt Romney if you knew he eats fetuses for breakfast every Sunday?"

The idea behind the poll is to plant the negative message about the candidate in the mind of the voter so as to discourage that person from voting for the candidate and is not designed to get true poll data.

Apparently this wasn't really a "push poll" but more likely the "push poll" evil twin "message testing." Push polls are usually only a few questions long, this poll apparently lasted 20 minutes. "Message testing" is similar to push polling but because the message test questions are buried in 20 minutes of polling the effect is minimal. Campaigns use message testing to test out how various lines of attack on other candidates would work with voters. In this case, Mitt's Mormonism was the target.

There are also whispers that this message testing was done by Romney supporters. It wouldn't be unheard of for candidates to message test themselves to find out their own weaknesses. However, given Romney's *shock* at the line of questioning if it turns out to be his people behind it he'll look like a total ass.

The famous one was the bush campaign having some group call SC voters and say something like "Would you vote for John McCain if you knew he had an illegitimate black child"? when in reallity McCain and his wife adopted their daughter from Mother Teresa's orphanage in Bangledesh.
