Seems I was kinda lucky as its being reported that volume of streamers gagged the HBO Max servers and loads of people got disappointed.
First blush: it aint Game of Thrones.
Of which I am not surprised. The book was a big drop off from The song of ice and fire series of books GoT was based on so there is that hurdle.
They clearly have a bigger budget for this show which should help but it doesnt as much as one would have hoped.
Just going to have to wait and see if the characters start to develop the chemistry that happened in GoT. Cant expect too much in the first episode of an ensemble cast.
I did find it jarring that they chose to cast a couple black actors (very good actors, thats not the issue) as ex-pats of Old Valeria (city of dragons) as Valerians all have platinum blond hair. The dad is kind of bearable since you could just accept that his dreads were white from age but his little daughter just cant pull it off and belies the age thing on him. Considering how little they cared about being woke on GoT it just a round peg in a square hole here.
So I'll keep watching and see if it gets some legs.
