The Maori Party is pushing to change the name of New Zealand to Aotearoa – Land of the White Cloud. They plan to change all place names, including the capital, Wellington, which will become Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
“It’s well past time that the Maori language was restored to its rightful place as the first and official language of this country.”

New Zealand, one of the Five Eyes, was first sighted by Dutch sailors who named it after the Netherlands province of Zeeland. Later, Captain Cook claimed it for the Crown; and later still, immigrants speaking Cockney English showed up claiming not to be Australians.

Sadly, I doubt if anything will come of this project to change Sea Land to White Cloud Land. The Maori Party only has two out of 120 MPs, and the rest aren’t so keen. It is said to have “lukewarm support” from Jacinda Ardern, if that’s any help.

Rotorua and Porirua, two towns on the North Island, have introduced bilingual signs – though not without the same conversations about “confusing” drivers taking place.

Many Place Names in the Southwest US are Spanish. I've never heard of any Anglos complaining.

Hmmmm ... don't know. It's never happened that I'm aware of.
Maybe if the 'Original People' (the local Indian Tribe) wanted to change say, San Francisco, or Los Angeles, or San Diego to 'Obijawwanda' or something. Maybe then. (?)
