Are hospital staff stealing coronavirus equipment?

President Trump has said requests for masks at an unnamed hospital in New York were typically between 10,000 and 20,000, but now they have jumped to 300,000.

He acknowledged in a media briefing that circumstances during a pandemic may be different, but he told reporters to investigate medical equipment ‘going out the backdoor’ at hospitals. The president suggested this alleged criminal activity is happening in ‘numerous places’.

Trump said: "Something’s going on, and you ought to look into it, as reporters. Where are the masks going, are they going out the backdoor?"

As the President of the United States has alleged this, we must of course consider it carefully. Is there a black market in medical masks? Are nurses selling them in bulk to other hospitals and vice versa? What do you think?

Trump does not care who he implicates in imaginary crimes he makes up to try and defend his slow reaction and mishandling of Corona. He throws shit out every day and rightys see the gospel.
 
trump has a long history of just making stuff up, so I would not take him at his word. This is the man who claimed that the sound of windmills causes cancer. And he is certainly not a details guy, and this story involves details.

When dealing with an infectious disease, medical staff is supposed to use more disposable masks. Many are forced to reuse masks, because of the shortages. This is causing quite a bit of cross contamination.
 
During WWII, General Marshall was asked by a senator about soldiers using toothbrushes to clean their boots. Marshall said that was a good thing. When soldiers had enough toothbrushes to waste, it meant that he had done his job, and there was more than enough equipment to win the war.

We are not there, and in fact are not even close. We have extreme equipment shortages. This is a disaster (on top of a disaster).

Can you show us all of the threads you started when Governor Cuomo said the very same thing over a month ago? No? Yeah, I didn't think so.

People are stealing masks and other medical equipment from hospitals, New York Gov. Cuomo says

"Not just people taking a couple or three, I mean just actual thefts of those products," Cuomo said at a press conference from the state capital in Albany. "I've asked the state police to do an investigation, look at places that are selling masks, medical equipment, protective wear, feeding the anxiety."

Well, as we now realize, it isn’t good. I think we realize our emergency stockpiles need to be maintained. At least I hope we’ve learned a lesson, but for Trump to blame something on Obama, that he didn’t care about, either, is just a distraction.
 
A terrible charge like that requires evidence. None has been provided. Trump accuses people and groups flippantly. They suffer from his actions and he moves on to something else.It is generally "people are saying the equipment is missing". I heard that someone did something. That is so childish. Trumps accusation do harm and they linger.

Theft of hospital equipment has been on the rise in recent years. You used to get sample meds, leftover (prescription) creams and bandages, etc. No more, according to my surgeon, it's due to them cracking down on theft. They have to record everything they use. He said for one example, someone stole a Doppler blood flow detector. What the hell would you do with that? He didn't know either...
