Norse mythology was used to explain natural phenomenon and for campfire family time, passing morals and values along. Most pre-Christian Scandinavians and Northern Mainlands people were tribal, slowly becoming those great estates of power that they were during the middle ages. Monarchy didn't truly gain a foothold in Europe before Christianity. There always seemed a contender to the throne and the further north you went the more fragmented and tribal the power was distributed.
