The 41-day occupation of federal land in Oregon was a giant mess, though new photos from inside the Malheur National Wildlife reveal just how much of a mess it was.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials released snapshots of what remained after the armed protesters, who first took over the refuge on Jan. 2, stood down.

The pictures show bottles and other trash scattered around the facility where occupiers protesting federal land policy rifled through office records and Native American artifacts.

Twenty-six people have been charged from leader Ammon Bundy to 25-year-old Jake Ryan, who with a comrade was accused earlier this week of digging a trench on land sacred to the Burns-Paiute Tribe.

The trench, pictured in the USFWS’s photos, was discovered partly filled with human feces after the occupation ended.

The tribe was able to visit the site, a burial ground, in late February.

The photos of what the protesters dumped on the land come as scientists at the refuge return to work trying to make the area hospitable for its longer-term inhabitants.

“It’s a little unsettling… when we come in every day we’re trying to take care of the land and build it up for wildlife,” biologist Linda Beck told KOIN.

Officials said that the”patriotic” pandemonium earlier this year cost taxpayers $6.5 million, though the figure is likely to rise.
