While Republican presidential candidates woo California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his endorsement, the former movie star's relationship with the state GOP has all but disappeared.

Prominent California Republicans generally do not want to criticize publicly the party's only statewide office holder, but privately they say Schwarzenegger has been governing as a Democrat since his re-election on a liberal platform last year. The complaint among Republicans is that the governor follows the lead of his Democratic wife, Maria Shriver.

I said this a long time ago. Maria Shriver is running the policy out of the Governor's office. She's about twice as smart as Arnold.

Technical correction: "Her" initiative.

His Kennedy wife, Maria, is running the state. Of that I have no doubt. Universal health care for California; signing up for the Kyoto climate change treaty; aggresive environmental protection? You think a republican is pushing those initiatives?

Guaranteed if she was running the state the the first thing she would have done is raised taxes. Yeah Arnold wants to be all green so he can beat Barbara Boxer in 2010. We'll see.

Cawacko, is this really the last bastion; the last reason you're even a republican? Has the last six years really shaken your GOP faith to the core? Is all you can clutch onto, is that the evil Dems will "raise your taxes" ;)

think about it man - as a person making a working class or a middle class wage, did your taxes ever go up during clinton, or Gray Davis? No they didn't. Because Democrats in the modern era almost never raise income taxes on the poor or middle class.

The US world was almost entirely differnet after Reagan. Before Reagan, people had thought it stupid to lower taxes. After Reagan, people thought it stupid to raise them. I'm almost amazed at the difference. In 1979, the top tax rate was fucking 70% - can you even imagine that in today's society?

My beliefs have not changed. As far as a Republican getting anything accomplished in California I have very low hopes for that. Arnold tried with the special election but after that he was pretty much powerless. Hence my happiness that he has at least not raised taxes.
 
I'm going to make a wild guess that duhla's not in the top tax bracket.

One thing I can say for you is that you are living proof of your own thesis that you needn't be too swift to make a lot of money.

No dude. I had my political beliefs well before Bush came into office. And my political beliefs include far more than the war in Iraq.

There are issues I agree with Bush on and there are issues I disagree with Bush on just as there are issues I agree with Arnold on and there are issues I disagree with Arnold on.

I'm not going to change my core beliefs because of a candidate.
