81 People Die in Iraq
At least 81 people died across the country on Monday. The death toll from the massive bombing in Sadr City has increased to 33. Shiite militants called for a general strike in Sadr City which has been under a U.S. siege for almost a week. On Tuesday the American Government agreed to end the seige and close but not remove the military checkpoints that have surrounded Sadr City since the disappearance of an American soldier who is now widely believed to be married to an Iraqi and who may have eloped with her.
150,000 U.S. Troops Now in Iraq
The United States is increasing the number of troops on the ground. There are now 150,000 troops inside Iraq – the largest number since January. And Rumsfeld has indicated that he may be in favor of sending even more troops into the imploding security situation there.
