Bad News For the Keystone XL

Just why Obama wanted to wait and make sure these things were stable and not rush into approving Keystone XL.

This is the second spill this [url=http://www.alternet.org/speakeasy/tara-lohan/train-derailment-spills-30000-gallons-oil-minnesota-was-it-tar-sands]week.

There is a push to get tar sands through the US -- whether by pipeline or rail. Either way, it may be a mess. Reuters reported today:

A mile-long train hauling oil from Canada derailed and leaked 30,000 gallons of crude in western Minnesota on Wednesday, as debate rages over the environmental risks of transporting tar sands across the border.

The leak - the first major spill of the modern North American crude-by-rail transit boom - came when 14 cars on a 94-car Canadian Pacific train left the tracks about 150 miles north west of Minneapolis near the town of Parkers Prairie, the Otter Tail Sheriff's Department said.

I understand Keystone will carry nine times the barrels as the Pegasus pipeline.

but thank you for the additional info

tar sand oil is much more difficult to clean than crude oil (which we have a hard enough time cleaning up, especially when leaked onto water)

This has less to do with Keystone issues, and more to do with the God of abortion being angry at the Arkansas state legislature for overturning the veto of the Human Heartbeat Protection Act.

Payback is a bitch

I can't wait to see what happens to ND!

So you think we should stop transporting all oil? If not, what exactly is your solution? What viable option is available today that will allow us to stop using oil?

while crude oil spills are difficult to clean up, tar sand oil is much harder to clean up...especially if it get in water, it heavier than water and sinks to the bottom of whatever water it is spilled in

Not disagreeing that it is harder to clean up. But a new pipeline also means... a new pipeline. Not one that has been used for years/decades.

I thought everyone wanted new infrastructure. And here they are, championing Obama for crushing new infrastructure because the CURRENT infrastructure is bad.

Is a pipeline infrastructure?

I have no problem with Keystone if it's safe to the environment, brings benefits to the US, and creates sustainable, not temporary, jobs.

Yes

1) Nothing is safe to the environment FOREVER, it has to be maintained
2) It does bring benefit to the US
3) It does create sustainable jobs at the US refineries in TX
4) Even if it were just temporary jobs, they would be temporary jobs at a time we desperately need jobs.
5) Almost all infrastructure development jobs are temporary...
