Third stimulus check update: Senate votes to push ahead toward Biden plan

President Joe Biden said Republicans' counter-offer to his $1.9 trillion stimulus bill is too small to deal with the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden panned a Republican alternative to his $1.9 trillion COVID rescue plan as insufficient Tuesday as Senate Democrats pushed ahead, voting to launch a process that could approve his sweeping rescue package on their own, if Republicans refuse to support it.

Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen joined the Democratic senators for a private virtual meeting, both declaring the Republicans' $618 billion offer was too small. They urged big fast action to stem the pandemic crisis and economic fallout.

The GOP is the party of multimillionaires and billionaires who don't want to pay their fair share of taxes, and don't want to contribute to the recovery.

Doing without the expressed aid of the Republicans seems to be the only sensible way to go.

The Republicans will claim President Biden is reneging on his promise to "unite" and work in a bi-partisan way.

He's gonna have to live with that. It would be great if the "working together" happens, but if it doesn't, the Democrats have to keep their eye on the prize...or on the goal. To get us out of this mess as expeditiously and reasonably as possible.

In the meantime, the Republicans will each have to make his/her own decision on whether to vote for or against the proposed legislation. I hope some of them switch over...

...but mostly I hope the proposal passes.

The GOP did not even want to pass a generous COVID stimulus, even when their own president disingenuously claimed he wanted $2000 checks to go out.

If I may...the GOP is the party of multimillionaires and billionaires...and lots of moronic, asskissing lackeys who want to treat those multimillionaires and billionaires like they are royalty.

The GOP have got no problem donating money to their big political contributors in the form of tax cuts, which equates to welfare for the filthy rich.

Too small, and they'll just have to do it all over again in a few months.

Too right you are.

We are not Zimbabwe or Myanmar.

Other developed liberal democracies have supported their small business owners and labor force with aggressive and generous government intervention.

Now is not the time to be theorizing and navel gazing about the merits of an Ayn Randian pull youself-up-by-the-bootstraps economic philosophy.

They had a small package.

Also, they opposed $600 checks in December but support $1,000 checks in February? What fucking sense does that make? They're acting in bad faith.

Many of us predicted that a Biden win would mean suddenly the budget matters again. Looks like we were right.

If they're so concerned over the budget, they should repeal the $2T tax cut they voted for and passed through reconciliation in 2017.

 Yes the Republican party is made up of millionaires, and Billionaires, but the democrats are not:laugh:

Lots of wealthy Democrats out there.

But this is a good metaphor for the basic values of the modern parties:

The last three Republican presidents were Trust Fund babies raised in wealth and privilege.

The last three Democratic presidents came from modest backgrounds: raised by single mothers, used car salesman, and teachers.

Hello Cypress,

Moral of the story: GOP stimulus counter proposal is too feeble and paltry.

The bigger mistake would be to go too small, rather than too large.

The size of the economy (which has been getting smaller) is the sum of all transactions. Money changing hands. People buying things.

When a big pile of money is injected into the economy, and people get money they didn't have, people will be spending money, buying things.

That creates jobs and saves jobs.

That is exactly what we are trying to do.

 Biden has lived off the Government his entire adult life, while milking the American tax payers! See, I am ok with wealthy people who become President. I am very suspect of those who become President. and get rich! Nope not Trump, he never took a dime, however Clinton, Obama, and yep Biden have enriched themselves while in power, Heck Biden did as VP, and is now repaying those energy companies, by killing our energy independence!
