There are many forms of bigotry that are relevant to political discussion and debate, but we must first understand what bigotry is in order to have intelligent debate.
Bigotry
big·ot·ry
ˈbiɡətrē
noun
noun: bigotry; plural noun: bigotries
intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself.
It is important that each form of bigotry is isolated from other forms of bigotry, since some forms of it are worse than others. On this forum for example, the majority of members here are intolerant of the political opinions of our political opponents, which means that we are basically an entire community of bigots. There are other forms of bigotry that are uglier, such as racism or discriminating based on race, gender, age, religion, etc, and we don't want these uglier forms of bigotry to be confused with less offensive forms of it.
It is important that victims of illegal bigotry be able to identify which specific form of bigotry they are victims of, so we must be careful to not confuse racism for example, with religious, (like Muslim, Christian, etc...) or ethnic, (German, Mexican, etc...) discrimination. If we try to identify bigots who discriminate against an ethnicity or gender as "racists", then ethnic or gender victims have no voice.
Incorrectly identifying which specific type of bigot an offender is, or including too many other forms of bigotry, provides shelter to the bigot. Call bigots out for exactly, and only what they are!
