RAVENSWOOD - Police have arrested the wife of a Ravenswood man who was beaten to death. Her boyfriend was also charged in the crime.

Roseann Osborne, 25, was arrested late Wednesday on charges of conspiracy to commit murder after her husband, Mohammed Mahrous, 35, was found dead at Ravenswood Riverfront Park Monday night.

Authorities also arrested a Jackson County man, Larry Samuel White, 31, in Indiana at around 5 a.m. today, said Ravenswood Police Chief Paul Hesson.

Osborne was arrested in a Jackson County hotel by Ravenswood police without incident. She is being held at South Central Regional Jail.

White was being held in Newburg, Ind., and is awaiting extradition to West Virginia. Hesson said two of his officers drove to Indiana on Wednesday to track down White, who was working at a construction site there.

Hesson said White was the boyfriend of Osborne.

Mahrous died of blunt force trauma, Hesson said.

Police said Mahrous and Osborne drove to the park in separate vehicles to meet for dinner Monday night. White was already at the park, and at some point, he attacked Mahrous and killed him, police said.

Osborne then called police and reported an assault in progress.

Hesson said he doesn't believe there were any other witnesses.

Mahrous told friends he planned to grab takeout after work and join his wife for dinner at the park, where they'd watch towboats go by on the Ohio River.

After moving to Jackson County from North Carolina just a few weeks ago, Mahrous commented to a coworker Monday that "people in West Virginia were so much nicer."

Later that evening, he was beaten to death near a concrete bench at the park while having dinner.

The park was closed to the public Monday night and Tuesday as police gathered evidence. It was reopened Wednesday. A bloodstain was visible on a concrete slab near one of the park benches.

Police said Mahrous and his wife had three young children. His youngest child was just 12 weeks old.

Mahrous and his family were living at Parker Properties trailer park a few miles from Ravenswood.

On Wednesday, no one answered the door at their mobile home. It appeared they had not entirely settled in yet, as bicycles, toy trucks, a baby car seat, a highchair, vacuum and several boxes were strewn around the yard.

Neighbors said they'd rarely seen Mahrous and knew little about the family.

But he seemed to make friends with ease while working as a cook at Fratello's Italian Steak House in Ripley, about 12 miles from Ravenswood.

"Mohammed was a great guy," said Joe Corey, a coworker. "He was a great fit. He'd only been here for a month, but he said people in West Virginia were friendly and nice to him."

Mahrous, who was of Egyptian descent, did not have any known enemies, his coworkers said.

Mahrous' wife is believed to be a Jackson County native. She has a mother living in the county.

Mahrous' relatives live in Egypt. Coworkers said he spoke with an accent but was fluent in English. He also dressed in casual American attire and recently bought a yellow Ford F-150 pickup truck, which was at the scene of the crime.

Kitty Richards is an assistant at Charles & Co., a real estate and management firm that oversees Fratello's restaurant.

Richards said Mahrous came to Jackson County from North Carolina because his wife wanted to move back here.

Though he grew up in Egypt and received an education at Alexandria, Egypt, he had lived in the United States for several years and was a legal resident, Richards said.

"He was not an illegal alien up here causing trouble, as some people might speculate," she said. "There was no unusual behavior. He didn't exhibit that type of behavior that something was wrong."

Richards said she was impressed with Mahrous' knowledge of the restaurant business, particularly Italian cuisine.

"That was his forte," she said.

He knew the distinctions between the varieties of Italian fare, which differs by regions, Richards said.

"The food in Northern Italy is different than Sicily," she said. "He had a lot of ideas and was very creative."

Mahrous had previous restaurant experience throughout North Carolina and Virginia. All of his references checked out positive, Richards said.

"He was always on time and worked long hours," she said.

His coworkers thought something was wrong when he didn't show up for work Tuesday. Mahrous' mother-in-law ended up calling Fratello's later that day to inform his bosses what had happened.

The news devastated the Fratello's crew.

"I thought we would have to close for the day," Richards said. "He made friends with everybody. We were stunned."

The restaurant plans to establish a fund to help Mahrous' family, but details are still being worked out.

Mahrous' murder marks the third homicide in Jackson County and the first in Ravenswood this year.

The last Ravenswood murder occurred in November 2006 when Scott A. Harrison stabbed his 49-year-old father Roy Lee Harrison in the neck with a hunting knife inside their apartment.

Chief Hesson said murders are uncommon in the city of 4,000 people. He urged residents to continue living as they would normally and called the park a safe place to take the family.

"I don't think it's a public safety issue," Hesson said. "It's an unusual event for the city. It's a good town with good people in it."

Hesson said he had never met Mahrous or his wife.

In the few weeks they knew him, coworkers said Mahrous was a pleasure to be around.

"He hardly had time to make friends, let alone enemies," Richards said. "He was a talented human being and really happy here. He said people were friendly and made him feel welcome."

I am not an anti illegal alien guy. I could really care less and know that all types of people commit crime.

The illegals aren't doing a good job of self promoting though.

5 of the last 7 Phoenix police officers killed in the line of duty were killed by illegal aliens, including one shot in the face and killed on Monday.

I don't think he was killed because he was here illegally. His wife's boyfriend did the deed? Come on, this is a love triangle thing, not an illegal immigrant thing.
