dec 19 2018 There is another core contributor to the problem that isn’t as widely known: the river of illegal aliens surging across our porous borders. As former LA Times reporter Sam Quinones’ award-winning book, Dreamland: The True Story of America’s Opioid Epidemic recounts, just as standards for the prescription of oxycodone and other painkillers were being tightened, a group of largely illegal Mexican immigrants from Xalisco, in the Mexican state of Nayarit, pioneered a new model of heroin distribution. It was in essence Uber for drug dealers, involving small franchises, with a nonviolent approach, carrying small amounts of drugs directly to addicts in their homes and neighborhoods, using a customer-first mentality and lots and lots of delivery drivers.

From Dreamland, “The delivery drivers did tours of six months and then left. If they were arrested they were deported, not prosecuted, because they never carried large amounts of dope.” With hundreds of new illegal aliens from the state entering the country every day, the police could arrest as many street-level dealers as they liked. As a DEA agent tells Quinones in another part of the book, “We arrest drivers all the time and they send new ones up from Mexico. They never go away.” There would always be new dealers, and the model could continue. An essential part of the process was the dealers returning home, where their ill-gotten gains provided them with status in their rural, poor homeland.

One merely needs to look at an opioid epidemic map to realize how silly Brietbart is being. The opioid overdose death rate is highest in West Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Maryland, and Massachusetts. Of those, four out of five have a lower percentage of illegal immigrants than the national average (MD being the exception). In fact, WV, NH, and OH each has one of the lowest percentage of illegal aliens in the country:

Meanwhile, Texas and California are each in the top three for highest percentage of illegal immigrants, and the bottom five for per capita opioid overdoses.

I haven't done all the math, but there just doesn't appear to be any positive correlation between illegal immigration and the opioid problem. If anything, it looks like it may be a negative correlation.

Opioid deaths are caused by too many prescriptions by US physicians and US pharmaceutical companies, not by immigrants. Even you should not be so gullible as to be manipulated by a hamfisted liar like Brietbart.

Watch the news.. look how many pill mills are being raided in the US..

Hey stupid. The claim is NOT that illegals are using the drugs. The claim is illegals are selling the drugs.

It is not BreitFart, but Congressman Paul Gosar, the same guy who all six of his brothers and sisters endorsed his opponent in the last election. And all he did was pharaphrased brief parts of a journalist's book, nothing more than the Congressman pimping the opioid problem to demogogue the border security issue, and a sophomore attempt at that

“To understand how heroin took hold in rural America, you need to go back two decades and look at the surge of prescription drug use in Portsmouth, Ohio, according to journalist Sam Quinones.

A Rust Belt town that had fallen on hard times by the 1990s, Portsmouth became a place where doctors dispensed prescription drugs more freely than anywhere else in the country, Quinones writes in his new book, Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic.

There was a "widespread kind of addiction that affects an entire generation in the town of Portsmouth," Quinones tells NPR Morning Edition host Renee Montagne.

Many of the pills are synthetic opiates, similar in their molecular structure to heroin, Quinones adds. As a result, many of those who originally became addicted to pills eventually wound up on heroin.

"Heroin is the fallback drug," Quinones says.”
