Iraq Credits Iran for Helping to Curb Attacks by Militias
By ALISSA J. RUBIN
BAGHDAD, Nov. 17 — The Iraqi government on Saturday credited Iran with helping to rein in Shiite militias and stemming the flow of weapons into Iraq, helping to improve the security situation noticeably.

The Iraqi government’s spokesman, Ali al-Dabbagh, speaking at a lunch for reporters, also said that the Shiite-dominated government was making renewed efforts to bring back Sunni Arab ministers who have been boycotting the government for more than four months.

Speaking about Iran, he said that that government had helped to persuade the Shiite cleric Moktada al-Sadr to ask his Mahdi militia to halt attacks. Mr. Sadr ordered his militia to stop using weapons in early September, and officials say that the militia’s relative restraint has helped improve stability. They say it also seems to have helped decrease the frequency of attacks with explosively formed penetrators, a powerful type of bomb that can pierce heavy armor.

Mr. Dabbagh’s comments echoed those of the American military here, who in recent days have gone out of their way to publicly acknowledge Iran’s role in helping to slow the flow of weapons into the country.

Mr. Dabbagh was the first Iraqi official to say publicly that Iran had used its influence with Mr. Sadr to discourage him from using his militia for armed attacks.

Since Mr. Sadr gave his order in mid-September, the numbers of unidentified bodies found on the streets of Baghdad daily have rarely exceeded a half dozen. When his militia was more active, there were often 30 or more unidentified bodies found daily.

“The freezing of the Mahdi Army makes us feel they have good intentions,” Mr. Dabbagh said. “Iran played a role in this.”

Mr. Dabbagh said that the turning point came when Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki visited Iran in August and met with the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the Shiite shrine city of Mashad. Mr. Maliki told the Iranian leader that “Iran had to choose whether to support the government or any other party, and Iraq will decide according to which they choose,” Mr. Dabbagh said. The Iranians promised to help and have done so, he said.

Good catch.

Color me not suprised its on page 20.

Good heavens! We can't allow people to think Iran is a country we can work with, and defuse situations with. How on earth will we be able to sell another splendid little war?

BTW: The new IAEA report says that they have been able to determine that NO declared nuclear matierials in Iran have been diverted to an alleged weapons program. Indeed, no evidence of a nuclear weapons program has been found to exist to date.

There are issues still related to transparency of the entire history and scope of Iran's nuclear program. But, there's simply no evidence to start a war with iran at this point, over nuclear weapons.

Do you get a sense that NeoCons simply wanted another splendid little war?

Oh totally! And just last week Dano was berating bac for not hating the iranians, and then claimed that bac puts bush-bashing before his family, because bac has a daughter in iraq and everybody knows the Iranians are killing us troops there.

So this is very interesting.

I'm glad you posted it.

A lot of iranian experts, like Juan Cole, have been saying that its entirely possible to work with the iranians, on areas of mutual interest.

I hope BushCo is not able to sell another war based on lies. Too bad the NY Times is often more likely to promote the BushCo spin on Iran

I hope that's correct. Its actually pretty scary that stuff like this gets buried on p20. If its even printed.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha that Dano is sooooo funny he always catches the most important part of the whole post hahahahahahaha, Like the fact that the IRAQI government has credited the Iranian government with CALMING the situation in Iraq. This is at the same time as our government is trying to drum up support for a war against Iran by saying that the Iranian government is the cause of the PROBLEM. Hahahahaha that Dano, always so SWIFT on the uptake.

I have no problem seeing the point, but it's patently ridiculous to suggest that THE most Liberal newspaper in America would try and deliberately hide stories that favor Liberals in later pages.

As to the point, I am not sure we can trust a Shiite Iraq dominated government to praise a Shiite dominated government in Iran for their help. Anymore than we can trust anything in this war.
It's not as if anything Iraq-related that makes Bush look bad is automatically going to be fact.

And since when did you lose your sense of humor anyway counsellor? ;)
