users of california beaches and coastal streams leave mounds of trash behind to be cleaned up by volunteers

A Barbie doll, fake fingernails, a cat scratcher and a gavel were just a few out-of-place items found on local beaches Saturday during California’s Coastal Cleanup Day.
More than 1,800 volunteers spread out over the two counties along Pacific beaches, meandering creeks and streams and at local lakes to pick up trash and recyclables. The grand total collected for both counties was 4,470 pounds of debris and 829 pounds of recyclable bottles and cans.
The state’s portion of International Coastal Cleanup Day, first organized in 1985 in Oregon and Texas, is the largest one-day cleanup effort in the world.
In Santa Barbara County, 847 volunteers combed 23 beaches and streams for trash.
