When I was your age (:fogey:) I read it, and it was just a comic book with all of Wattersons commentary and motivation behind some of the more epic cartoons, the one in this thread included.

Now I'm reading Watterson's bio, and its damned cool.

I have the first one. Even have an original copy (the news paper) of their last strip.
 
I remember reading the last two prints of Calvin & Hobbes in the Seattle Times. The second-to-last one had a battle map in the snow of how they were going to sled along a particular route picking off various characters with snowballs and eventually landing at a snow fort stocked with like a thousand balls. The commentary along with route was funny.
 
watterson is a extremely cool/odd dude. He described how he'd have a phase where he would make a bunch of paintings and then go burn them in a forrest
