Data released last week found that 62 percent of American men who self-reported being HIV-positive said they had unprotected anal sex with a male partner in the last 12 months.

The Centers for Disease Control report, “HIV Testing and Risk Behaviors Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men who have Sex with Men,” noted that the population of men having sex with men (MSM) is a small proportion of the US population; however, this group represents the majority of people diagnosed with HIV.


In 2011, men who had sex with men accounted for at least half of persons diagnosed with HIV in all but two states. Anal sex is cited by the CDC as having the highest-risk practice for HIV infection.


“High HIV prevalence, lack of awareness of HIV-positive status, and unprotected anal sex” between gay, bisexual and other men are cited by the CDC as contributing to continued new infections among this population.


However, only 67 percent of sexually active MSM reported getting an HIV test in the past year.


The researchers found that some men attempt to decrease their HIV risk by only engaging in unprotected sex with those “perceived” as having HIV or not. However, this practice is risky because some may not disclose or may not know they are infected with the virus.


Unprotected anal sex among MSM increased from 2005 to 2011, and in 2011 one-third of HIV-positive MSM who did not know if they were infected reported unprotected sex with a partner who said they were HIV-negative or did not know either.

Why am I not surprised, billions spent on AIDS prevention and they choose to ignore it. Time to cut the funding off and spend it on something else.

Why should we believe someone who thinks that AIDs was created by white scientists to kill off black men and women? AIDS is primarily transferred via anal sex, that is why it is so rife in Africa. I know that it is not PC to say so but then the truth is often that way, instead of the bullshit propagated by people like Poet.

Anal sex is viewed as something that only takes place among men who have sex with men (MSM) denying the fact that this form of sexual intercourse was a major driver in the HIV epidemic among heterosexual couples, researchers told the Microbicides 2010 conference this week. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are not at greater risk of being infected with HIV through unprotected anal sexual intercourse than heterosexual couples using the same method researchers said.

Delivering a paper on whether Africa needed a rectal microbicide Professor Salim Karim of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) said anal sex was common among MSM and heterosexual couples and that a prevention method was needed for all groups. An anonymous survey done in Cape Town involving 2 593 men and 1 818 women found that 14% of men and 10% of women had reported anal intercourse in the past three months. Only half (50%) of the women reported condom use during anal sexual intercourse while 67% of men said they had used condoms.

Another study in KwaZulu Natal revealed that 42% of truck drivers reported anal sex with female sex workers. Studies in other African countries showed that there was a great prevalence of bisexual relationships. A cross sectional study in Malawi found that 34.1% of MSM reported having wives or a stable female partner while 53% had both male and female sexual partners. These findings were similar in Egypt and Kampala, Uganda where 73.3% and 39% of MSM said they were bisexual respectively. Karim sited issues such as the decriminalisation of same sex relationships in some African countries as a great challenge. He said cases such as that of the Malawian couple that was detained for being homosexual worsened the spread of HIV. In Malawi over 21% of MSMs are infected with HIV.

His presentation showed that MSMs were present and had a high prevalence of HIV infection in Africa. South African MSMs had a prevalence of 14% while Kenya and Tanzania recorded 10.6 % and 12% respectively. He expressed concern over the lack of information that was available about the rate of HIV prevalence in MSMs across the continent. In some countries unprotected anal intercourse was associated with various factors including lack of information about the high rate of transmission of HIV through unprotected anal sex, increased alcohol use and not knowing anyone with HIV.

Other findings revealed that some women and men associated anal intercourse with preventing pregnancy as opposed to vaginal intercourse. Karim said such findings supported the need for a rectal microbicide on the continent, not only for use among MSM but also for heterosexual groups. He said anal intercourse remained a taboo that people refrained from discussing. He added that a sex education programme in South African schools made no mention of anal sexual intercourse. “We fought to get the sex education topic in schools, and the next leap is to take anal sexual intercourse talk and get people talking about it,” he said. He said even staff in research trials found it difficult to speak to participants about anal sex. But it is currently widely practiced including young people,” said Karim.

Jim Picket director of the International Rectal Microbicide Advocates (IRMA) said in a report that there were too many dangerous misconceptions about anal sex. “There is still massive denial that anal intercourse happens among heterosexuals. Consequently, an important driver in the global HIV epidemic remains invisible. This silence allows people to entertain dangerous misconceptions from ‘anal sex is less risky than vaginal intercourse’ to ‘you can’t get HIV from anal intercourse,”said Pickett.

The group with the highest incidences of new HIV cases, remains white men who have sex with men. Followed by black men who have sex with men. The campaign for increased awareness and condom use, is ubiquitous in the gay community.

I know that this will not go over very well with Libs, especially our gay Forum Libs, but if this keeps up there is only one solution: To tattoo something on their asses that only a potential lover would/could see, something, a symbol that indicates that they are HIV infected. It would be either that or the threat of a potential felony crime charge such as assault with a deadly weapon, aka their sex organs. This would also go for women who screw around. If that sexual partner contracted Aids from someone who knowingly had HIV and subsequently died from it, then the charge would be murder, what else could it be.
