How would it negate free will? I think God would be perfectly capable of influencing events without violating free will. Why couldn't He influence people into doing something they would have done anyway, or done earlier or later then they would have done it? Like meeting someone at a well. Maybe the lady decided to get up early, or procrastinate, and just happened to be there at the right time. Either way, she had to get some water. God simply made it possible that the two would meet. Also, notice God didn't force them to get married after meeting at the well.
For example, if two women are out shopping and one of them mentions a sale the other was unaware of, was her free will violated if she goes to that sale and buys something? No. It wasn't. Same thing. God just gives a little nudge here and there. But there is not one example of God forcing someone to do something against their will.
