This is the right thing to do.
Impeachment is already political enough - that is unavoidable.
This measure will help make the outcome less so.

And that mindset is coming from the ideology that claims is supports and practices tranparency.
It is political secrecy. Trump has the Repubs living in dread. Many do not want to lose their seats. Trump is vengeful and mean spirited. The Reds voted for such a man to have all that power.

When considering an impeachment the concern is not how it represents what the people think about it.
It is not a matter of representation.
The concern is determining guilt.
Did the person being impeached do the suspected incorrect thing or not?
Is the misconduct a high crime against the Constitution?
If the answer to both questions is yes then the person should be found guilty and removed from office.
That's the oath they took.
There is no oath to defend the suspect, nor to represent what the public thinks happened. Nor to consider how their vote will affect their chances of reelection. That should not be a consideration. That's not what impeachment should be about.
The task at hand is about performing proper oversight of a coequal branch of government. This is what the public depends on Congress to do. No other body can do it. The responsibility is theirs. This time, they blew it. A big part of that failure is concern for how their votes will be perceived. We will get better justice on this going forward if we change the Constitution to make impeachment votes done by secret ballot.

Why would we need to change the Constitution? The two Houses of Congress have the constitutional authority to make their own rules as long as they don't violate anybody's constitutional rights. The only constitutional mandate I know of concerning voting in impeachments is the mandate for a 2/3ds majority to convict.
Careful what you wish for Trump would likely have been acquitted by a 7/8 majority, huh? NAH! Never happen Democrats HATE Mob ain't that honest, or for that matter honest at all!
Not a bad idea, except that elected officials are accountable to their constituencies. That cant happen if their votes are secret.
That is for cowards. Since it is a political process the voters should know the political decisions made by their senators. You cannot suppress politics in a political body given sole authority over the process.
It is not like the vote would have been very different with a secret ballot.
The losing side always wants to change the rules because they think their side will do better--abolish the electoral college, change campaign finance rules, invoke the "nuclear option" to confirm nominations, increase the size of the Supreme Court, make government more transparent, now less transparent......
Only 47% thought it would be just to remove the president.

Trump wins, do away with the EC, Trump is impeached...shred the rule of law and make HEARSAY testimony valid. Now you want the constitution changed to make what is supposed to be TRANSPARENT to the bosses of the these Congress critters...THE PEOPLE... critters (both house and senate)...hidden and not transparent? ITS THE PEOPLE that are actually voting.....not these pompous ass elite LIFETIME CAREER politicians. So...you are supposed to VOTE YOUR HEART regardless of what hidden reason lies within....instead of actually REPRESENTING your constituents and making a decision based upon the rule of law and its fundamental protections?
What surprises me....Is how anyone could vote to convict (remove)…..when there was no evidence of a single law being broken. That is if you believe in and accept the US RULE OF LAW. Lady Justice wears a blindfold for a reason, she does not convict upon FEELINGS or SUBJECTIVE EMOTIONS (hearsay)…..she convicts or acquits based upon OBJECTIVE EVIDENCE that results in guilt beyond a reason of any sane person to doubt.
