China executes ex-drug chief for graft

Not that I condone this sort of action, but it'll be a long time before this happens again. I'll give the Chinese that.

Harsh!

The chinese are like that. I remember when we had the y2K computer bug "problem". And there was fear that air traffic control systems would go down, and airplanes would crash.

The chinese solution to fix the problem? They told all the managers of their airlines, that they would have to get on a plane and be flying on New Years eve 2000.

LOL! Wow! Talk about stressful! I hadn't heard that. Pretty insane.

Like you said, it'll be a long time before that happens in China again.

If Tom DeLay had been hung from the Whitehouse roof for his crimes and I bet the Congress would behave itself.

But I'm being 90% facetious anyway, so no one get up in arms.

Too bad We are not as progressive as China....
BTW I now seem to have A chinese channel on my satellite, Peru and others as well....Perhaps it will help us to get along if we share the telly ?
It seems to be all we pay attention to now-a-days anyways.

Personally I think all criminal penalties should be doubled for elected officials because of the position of authority and trust we place in them.

I'm sure they'd think twice about taking bribes

Its not a country where the rule of law is applied equally and impartially.

I'm sure if you're friends with the right people in government, and don't get on their bad side, you can take all the bribes you want.

If you don't have friends in high places, or you get on the wrong side of them, you might get executed.

Its kind of like the Bush adminstration: If you're good friends with the President and VP - like Scooter was - you can lie, cheat, and steal, and you'll get off scott free in the end.

Still, it would make you think twice knowing there is a real possibility that you may be executed for taking some money.

Punishment above a reasonable delimiter usually does little to deter crime. Unless, of course, it's just the death penatly for everything. In which case you'd be causing a reign of terror yourself and just eliminating the entire point of a justice system.

That's so retarded I refuse to even comment. You're just one of those "law and order" dumbasses who thinks raising penalties and causing a reign of terror in the US is the answer to everything. It does little, costs much, and we have 5 times the amoung of people in prison as China.

A dumbass history teacher of mine once told me under the "eye for an eye" system, people would be "thinking twice" about stealing that bread. And what? THey'd have to give back the bread if they were caught? That's an eye for an eye. US punishment is often much, much more than an eye for an eye, for instance, you get thrown in jail for a year for stealing a newspaper in Mississippi.
