Citing First Amendment, federal judge blocks Trump order to end funding for NPR and PBS

Citing the First Amendment, a federal judge on Tuesday agreed to permanently block the Trump administration from implementing a presidential directive to end federal funding for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service, two media entities that the White House has said are counterproductive to American priorities.

The operational impact of U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss' decision was not immediately clear — both because it will likely be appealed and because too much damage to the public-broadcasting system has already been done, both by the president and Congress.

Moss ruled that President Donald Trump’s executive order to cease funding for NPR and PBS is unlawful and unenforceable. The judge said the First Amendment right to free speech “does not tolerate viewpoint discrimination and retaliation of this type.”

this decision is wrong and retarded.

free speech is not the right to make others pay for your speech.

I wish conservatives would wake up. Trump lost this case because he is a phony. He does not actually hold conservative thoughts.

Had he said America is not going to use tax dollars to fund journalism, he would of had a case. But nope, retard in chief had to issue an order that was obviously not going to hold up to challenges - the below is just a moron with a pen

----------------------
Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. No media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies, and the Government is entitled to determine which categories of activities to subsidize.

Trump is an idiot. Public broadcasting created many, many programming genres that spread all over cable TV, resulting in many jobs.
They invented cooking shows that are now all over the dial.
They invented children's TV that married characters and education into children's learning experience.
They created the home improvement programs that are all over TV.
They provide musical programs from opera, symphonies to country and western.
They produce educational documentaries in Nature and science, social issues, arts and culture, and history as Ken Burns has proven. .
What Trump does not like is that they are not 100 percent pro-Trump.

There is no need for taxpayers to fund pbs or npr.

you don't have a right to fund your points of view with other people's money.

The value has been shown by the adoption of the programs that I listed. They used PBSs ideas for programs. Without the stubborn business leaders making decisions based on immediate profits, TV would be way back in time.
It is sad that you have so much trouble understanding how the innovation of public TV has created many programs and jobs. But, poopy pants, nobody looks to you for interesting views and good ideas. https://constitutioncenter.org/the-constitution/preamble
Can you understand what promoting the general welfare means?
You are on your knees to wealthy and business leaders.

Tell us specifically how npr and pbs "promote the general welfare"? You wing nuts toss words and phrases around as if you know what they mean. AGAIN be specific in your examples.

You keep arguing that PBS made good programs. I never said otherwise. I said good programs do not automatically justify forced taxpayer funding.

If people value it, they can support it voluntarily. That is how we distinguish “worth having” from “worth compelling everyone to pay for.”

“General welfare” is not a magic phrase that turns every culturally useful product into a public obligation.

And it will survive, as it is now. Just unfortunate Trump and his followers have zero interest in culture and/or feel threatened by it.

Opposing public subsidy is not opposing culture. It is opposing the idea that every worthwhile thing belongs on the taxpayer’s tab.

If PBS has real public value, it should be able to attract real public support voluntarily.

And yes, I find it insulting that some people talk as if culture cannot exist without government sponsorship. Culture existed long before bureaucrats funded it, and it will exist long after.

The order is meaningless. No judge has any authority to change the Constitution. Judge Randolph Moss exceeded his authority.
NOTHING in the 1st amendment designates who the federal government must fund.

He does. Communism never works.

NOTHING compels the federal government to fund anything!

It is not a function of government to be a radio or TV network.

As I said, PBS goes on. I don't know who the "some people" are you feel insulted by but many Americans, myself included, have been pleased to have a portion of our taxes devoted to the nation's cultural life.

This easily has to be one of the most retarded decisions by a judge ever. With like 500 channels of stuff to choose from, why the FUCK do we need a government sponsored and paid for channel on television? PBS has outlived its mandate. When there 3 channels on TV, it had a purpose as an alternative. Today, it's just another insignificant cable channel among hundreds of choices.

This is NOT a free speech issue in the least. Moss is a moron, and his history of rulings pretty much proves it.

PBS can go on without government funding. It has no valid government purpose anymore. You want to donate, fine by me. What you don't have a right to are my tax dollars subsidizing just another channel on television when there's like 500 channels to choose from.

Irrelevance fallacy.
They invented cooking shows that are now all over the dial.
Dead wrong, Sybil. The first cooking show in the United States was "Cook's Night Out", which ran on NBC for only one year. The cooking was done live on the show (other than baking, simmering, or roasting times).
They invented children's TV that married characters and education into children's learning experience.
Wrong again, Sybil. The first children's show in the United States was the "Howdy Doody" show, which ran on NBC starting in 1947. It ran for 13 years.
They created the home improvement programs that are all over TV.
Nope. They stayed on PBS. No great loss. Anyone can gain the skills to build, maintain, or improve a home.
They provide musical programs from opera, symphonies to country and western.
Music has been around for thousands of years. The first TV music show was the Ed Sullivan show, which started in CBS in 1948.
They produce educational documentaries in Nature and science,
Some nature shows, almost nothing for science.
social issues, arts and culture, and history as Ken Burns has proven. .
What Trump does not like is that they are not 100 percent pro-Trump.
What has been aired by PBS or NPR is irrelevant. It is not a government function to be a TV or radio network.
NOTHING forces the government to fund anything.
