The United States Coast Guard has revised and clarified its policy, removing its "hate symbol" designation for swastikas and nooses, instead labeling them as "potentially divisive," according to officials.

In November, the Coast Guard had written a policy revision downplaying the symbols. Later in the month, Coast Guard officials shifted direction amid backlash, saying swastikas and nooses would remain classified as hate symbols.

However, the initial policy revision to label the symbols as "potentially divisive" went into effect Monday, prompting concern from some members of the Connecticut delegation.
