Collateral Damage

It would be easy to mock these people as stupid, ignorant, or clannish -- and to some degree, they tend to be those things. Mostly though, I find this both terribly sad, and totally baffling. I don't get it. Can someone explain this mind-set?

"Jimmie Coffer, a machine programmer at the nation’s largest nail-making plant, voted for Donald Trump partly because he was confident he would bring manufacturing jobs back to America.

"So the 39-year-old factory worker was shocked last month when 60 of his co-workers were laid off after the Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on the steel his company imports from Mexico. Now, as his bosses cut back hours and warn they may have to let 200 more workers go in the coming weeks, he worries he may lose his job as a result of the president’s policies.

"But Coffer is still gung-ho about Trump.

"“I support him 100%,” he said last week. “In fact, I’d like to shake his hand. He’s doing a great job.”

"Across Poplar Bluff, a struggling town of 17,000 in a remote pocket of southeast Missouri, many residents are reluctant to criticize Trump as they grapple with the prospect that their community could be one of the trade war’s first casualties.

"“Most workers are behind Trump, no matter what,” said Diane Brogdon, 54, a machine operator who has worked for the company for 12 years.

"Trump won 79% of the vote here in Butler County and, while many were surprised to discover the tariffs are hurting their town, they still believe Trump is on the right track and firmly support his goal of pouring life back into dilapidated manufacturing communities — even if they end up losers."

This is easy.

dump hates Blacks and other minorities.

That's enough for any racist right winger to support him.

I have no doubt that that is not part of their continued support. I lived in Missouri for 55 years. It is extremely racist; worse than the South even. My oldest son's wife is a woman of color; my g-kids are mixed. They made the decision after he got out of the Navy in 2009 to move to Baton Rouge LA rather than back to Missouri because they didn't want their kids exposed to that.

Still, you would think at some point that your own personal economics would transcend your hate, but guess not.

That's because you assume anyone who is not rich benefits from more government programs when that isn't the case. But because you choose not to recognize that you just call them racist as a cop out.

Democrats are losing ground with Hispanics in spite of whatever the current outage is.

They don’t know ‘the real’ Trump lol?

What? What in the world does losing their jobs due to tariffs have to do with government programs? Did you read the article? One woman was worried about paying the mortgage on the home she just bought; another guy worries about his mortgage, two vehicles, and new Harley. Hardly poor people.

Many of the rural ppl of Missouri are extremely racist. A lot of that has to do with the fact that they don't live around very many ppl of color, most of whom live in the large cities.

Does it ever occur to you that people of color in big cities are no more or less bigoted than people in Missouri lol?

People are people.

I guess you missed the part where this is a Mexican owned company that was bought a few years ago from its founders and many working here think it is an EXCUSE to move the company to Mexico and blame Trump?

I guess you missed the part where this MEXICAN owned company also imports 70% of its steel from Mexico? Coincidence?

Did you also missed that some accused the company of exaggerating the risks to workers and blamed the firm for importing steel from Mexico?

I guess you missed why the media is suddenly interested in this tiny town and tiny company; McCaskill, toured the nail plant last week and railed about the Trump administration’s handling of tariffs.

Did you figure on the media thinking it would find some people here critical of Trump and then were disappointed that people aren't as stuipd as the Democratic constituency?

It is apparent that you missed an awful lot except for parroting the talking points a desperate McCaskill is trying to get across to hold onto her seat.

For many it has nothing to do with race. They have some values which they feel are more important than their personal economic situation and Trump identifies with those same values. Some believe the tariffs will eventually create more jobs. Whether their beliefs are accurate or not is less important than what they believe.

When Hillary said she was going to put coal miners out of business it is silly to argue those people are voting against their own economic interests.

Thanks. At least you addressed the question and didn't wander down the other path.

Tariffs are terrible economics and people get hurt by them but if you believe like Cypress does that free trade and trade agreements hurt the working man why would you vote someone who believes in free trade like I do or as Cypress said corporate Dems like the Clintons? You vote for Bernie or Trump. You still get f'd but at least they are "looking out for you".

But this argument is similar to the "What's The Matter With Kansas" book which states working class whites vote against their economic interests because of guns, abortion and racism. Their "economic interest" being implied as more government programs.

Yes, but when other nations place them on our products, we have to be idiots to think that we have a level playing field.

That's a different way to look at it. I always think of taxes, jobs, unions, and other benefits when I read/hear that "voting against their own interests" phrase. Of course in some cases, they *are* on govt. benefits like SNAP, social security disability, Medicaid, etc. -- and voting for politicians who want to cut those programs drastically seems pretty short-sighted and dumb.

They will keep eating Trump's shit happily, but when it comes time to swallow, reality might set in.

People on SNAP, disability, and Medicaid have very low voter turnout. Also, it is not like voting will affect those benefits. They continue to increase annually regardless of party.

And voting today is geared toward emotional issues, not government benefits which will continue regardless of who is elected.

The POS that is Obama lied through his teeth about people being able to keep the plan and the doctor they wanted and people like you still puckered up to his black ass. If an Obama supporter lost their healthcare and suffered because of it, good. They deserve what they got.
