The written language is so pretty, like artwork. Does it have roots in another language (Sanskrit, or something like that)? I'm imagining being a tourist and not having a clue about where to go or how to get there.

It has its roots in the Indian languages Pali and Sanskrit as well as the Chinese dialect Hokkien.
