I would not do this in almost any job I wanted to keep

"I hate Black people more than I hate being a cop." A California officer texted this. He's now permanently banned from policing.

Former San Jose police officer Mark McNamara has been permanently decertified after hundreds of racist texts were discovered during an unrelated investigation. One message read: "I hate Black people." Another: "I hate Black people more than I hate being a cop." Police Chief Anthony Mata recommended he never serve as an officer again in California.

McNamara was the officer who shot K'aun Green four times outside a San Jose restaurant in March 2022. Green, a college football player, had wrestled a gun away from a man during a bar fight. In texts referencing the shooting, McNamara used racial slurs and showed no remorse. A federal judge later ordered the release of over 300 additional messages, nearly all containing slurs.

In depositions, McNamara claimed his language came from movies and comedy shows. Green's attorneys filed a civil rights lawsuit.

The case broke in November 2023 and has continued through federal court.

Since McNamara appears on POST’s decertification list under a revocation action, this is legally conclusive.
