Did Dana Schutz, a white artist, have the right to paint Emmett Till? Was it fair that a white historian, David Blight, won a Pulitzer for his biography of Frederick Douglass? Should Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner be the ones to update “West Side Story,” a musical conceived by four Jewish men but fundamentally about Puerto Rican lives?

Let’s make it personal: Am I, as a new columnist for The Times, allowed to weigh in on anything other than a narrow sliver of Gen X white woman concerns?

This is just dumb.
This is the kind of whiney navel gazing that gives Gen X lefty metrosexuals a bad name.

I have taken Japanese and Chinese history courses taught by American white men

I have taken a course on African history by a white American man.

I have taken a course on the New Testament taught by a Jewish woman.

I have taken American history from an English professor.

I have taken a Spanish history class by a white American woman.

I have taken a class on Islam by a white guy with an Italian surname from New York City.

I took a class on Mayan history from a white guy.

I took a class on Medieval European history from a guy from Cuba.


None of it ever raised an eyebrow with anyone.


The only thing that matters is expertise and quality of scholarship.

I'll take a class on German history from an Australian aborigine if they have the scholarly qualifications and expertise.

It’s not often I do a double take but I did here. An article about lived experience and how it’s viewed in todays culture and your response is - to compliment DeSantis? What gives?
