Petition to access Muslim rape gang trial transcripts raises thousands
A petition launched to raise funds in order to access transcripts of a gang rape case which came before a court in Oxfordshire has reached over £22,000.
The case in question is one of a series of cases involving grooming gangs operating in the UK where predominantly Muslim men of Pakistani origin targeted British girls who were raped and in many cases tortured.
Although the abuse took place between 2002-2005, the case was brought to a conclusion in 2019 when three Pakistani origin men, Anjum Dogar, 37, Mohammed Karrar, 44, and his 39-year-old brother Bassam, were convicted of 10 charges, including conspiracy to rape a girl aged between 13 and 16 at the time of the abuse.
The case has gained significant attention online in recent days after transcripts of the sitting judge’s sentencing remarks containing explicit details of the extreme abuse inflicted on the victim were shared online.
A 13-year-old victim referred to in court documents as AB was raped by what the judge called “vast numbers” of men as well as being threatening with death.
Another victim referred to as EF who was 13 when the abuse started was given cocaine and cannabis which she became addicted to.
On one occasion of abuse, Mohammed Karrar, orally and vaginally raped the girl as well as throttling her and urinating on her.
Another girl, GH in court records- who was 12 years of age at the time – was prepared for anal gang rape by Karrar where a pump was used to expand her anal passage before she was raped by five or six men.
The fundraiser was launched by Adam Wren who says the financial cost of attaining the court records means that even victims do not have access to court transcripts of their own cases.
Wren says that a single page of court transcript “typically” costs £2-£4 per page in circumstances where trials can run for multiple weeks.
Wren says the petition aims to raise funds “to obtain official court transcripts through legal channels to improve public understanding of institutional failures in child protection cases.”
He says these documents “are crucial for researchers, journalists, and the public to fully understand systemic issues that were identified in official reports.”
