Outrage is growing in California against newly approved sex education material in public schools.
California public school now hold "condom relay races" in which 10- and 11-year-old girls - in front of boys - are taught how to put a condom on a model of an erect adult male penis.
Some teachers also are alarmed by the sex ed training they have to go through, including learning how to use anatomically correct, fully erect adult male penis models for teaching lessons about sex to their young students.
The programs are supposed to comply with the California Healthy Youth Act, “which mandates the teaching of ‘medically accurate’ and ‘age appropriate’ comprehensive sex education.
The new framework encourages classroom conversations in sixth grade about masturbation and kindergarten discussions on gender identity.
Josh Stickney, communications manager with Equality California, said he does not believe the curriculum is out of the ordinary.
“We don’t believe any of this will prime students to do anything they wouldn’t normally do,” Stickney said. “It’s important to dispel myths and stigma around sex health for the LGBT community. That starts with awareness and sex education.”
According to the
Washington Post, California’s sex education framework offers numerous subjects for discussion at each grade grouping, including:
- Grades kindergarten through three: gender identity
- Grades four through six: sexual feelings, including masturbation
- Grades seven through eight: consent and sexual abuse
