Cynthia McKinney Aboard Boat Headed for Gaza, Intercepted by Israeli Naval Force

Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney, unimpeded by the "closed military zone" imposed by Israel, was among 16 people aboard a medical supply boat that collided with an Israeli naval ship Tuesday as it tried to enter coastal waters around Gaza.

The yacht, owned by the U.S.-based Free Gaza Movement, was reportedly carrying 3.5 tons of medical supplies donated by Cyprus. A press release from the group claimed "several Israeli gunboats intercepted the Dignity she was heading on a mission of mercy to Gaza." They said the Israeli military fired machine guns into the water in an attempt to stop the Dignity's progress.

The boat, registered under the flag of Gibraltar and with an English captain, reportedly took on water and experienced engine problems, according to the group's Web site. It also said the incident occurred 90 miles offshore in international water. The boat's captain was given permission to dock in Lebanon, where it was regrouping to try again.

Israel's foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told Reuters that an Israeli vessel and the 60-foot Free Gaza Movement boat did make "physical contact," but only after the aid boat failed to respond to radio contact. He denied any gunfire had occurred, and he said no one was hurt in the incident. He told Reuters the Israeli ship escorted the damaged boat back to Cypriot territorial waters.

That's the Fox News account .. but according to McKinney, the boat was rammed three times.

It's a blockade. They aren't going to let any humanitarian supplies through. They had already been doing that. It's an act of war. But the whiners will talk about a freaking half-assed rocket. These people are starving.

No humanitarian aid?

don't we normally sic the UN on countries that do that?

Maybe Hugo will take them some fuel and supplies.

Perhaps you can explain to me why it is Hamas called off the ceasefire.

I agree with you .. but the most important element from the 60's that missing today is activism. Nobody wants to take a stand or even support those who do.

You're right, those people are starving and wounded children are going unattended with the proper medical treatment.

People can say whatever they will about Cynthia, she's is unafraid to take a stand whether it costs her a career or her own life.

It's been an honor and an education knowing her.

So you aren't going to read your own article?

Instead you try to find something that implicates Israel?

BOTH parties have done things that have violated the truce. But this all escalated once Hamas declared the truce was over.

Look at the LA times article.

"The truce was always fragile, with numerous violations by each side from the beginning," said Robert A. Pastor, an American University professor who joined former President Carter in meeting with Hamas leaders in Syria last weekend and then traveled here without Carter to discuss the truce with Israeli officials."

The United Nations and other observers supported this assertion and accused Israel of inflicting collective punishment on Gaza's civilian population.

According to U.N. data, the number of truckloads of food and humanitarian supplies reaching Gaza rose during the truce to a peak of 2,593 per month but remained far below the 9,400 monthly average before mid-2007.

Supplies of industrial diesel fuel also rose, to 676,000 gallons per week, but remained short of the 924,000 gallons needed each week to operate Gaza's only power plant at full capacity, according to Gisha, an Israeli group that advocates freer movement over the Gaza border.

Israeli officials countered that any shortages should be blamed on Hamas' unceasing belligerence. Although rocket and mortar attacks dropped to one a week during early autumn, they never stopped, and Israel said Hamas used the calm to replenish its arsenal by smuggling in weapons from Egypt.

The truce began to unravel Nov. 4 when Israeli forces entered Gaza for the first time since June to blow up a tunnel that, according to Israel, Hamas was digging as part of a plan to capture Israeli soldiers along the border. Six Hamas members were killed during the operation.

yes, I read all of that. AND?

As it says, both sides did not live up to the agreement. Israel did not deliver as much as they said they would and Hamas did not stop all of the rocket attacks. BOTH sides failed to live up to the agreement.

As stated above, it unraveled further when Israel bombed the tunnel Hamas was digging.

Then Hamas declared and end to the ceasefire and all hell broke loose.

Both parties share the blame in this.
