NEW YORK - Comcast Corp. actively interferes with attempts by some of its high-speed Internet subscribers to share files online, a move that runs counter to the tradition of treating all types of Net traffic equally.

The interference, which The Associated Press confirmed through nationwide tests, is the most drastic example yet of data discrimination by a U.S. Internet service provider. It involves company computers masquerading as those of its users.

If widely applied by other ISPs, the technology Comcast is using would be a crippling blow to the BitTorrent, eDonkey and Gnutella file-sharing networks. While these are mainly known as sources of copyright music, software and movies, BitTorrent in particular is emerging as a legitimate tool for quickly disseminating legal content.

I didn't read the article. I just want to say that Comcast blows whalecock so this comes as no surprise to me.

There are already services up - like Vuze - that allow people to share legitimate content through bittorrent. Granted, it's built into Azureus, which is mainly used for copyright breach, but bittorrent should be realized by developers as a way to cost-effectively distribute content for purchase. The thing about file sharing services is that it doesn't require humongous servers to be online all the time sending the content downstream, and you save a lot of money that way.

It's comcastic!

They have a complete monopoly in this area. It fucking sucks. I dont want satellite but I would also like a broadband/digital cable connection that doesn't cut out every thirty seconds and shut down for days at a time.

Seriously each of the 4 times I've moved this year Comcast has sucked equally at all of them.

You could split it up. But I feel that would end up like the AT&T split. Communications companies are like the T1000 - no matter how many pieces you split them into, they come back together (to quote Colbert).

d

perhaps now that it is known, people will change ISPs

or maybe comcast is just a stooge for the dhs

politicians and evil doers world wide hate the internet except that they would like to reserve it for their own usage...

In 2004 the American Customer Satisfaction Index survey found that Comcast had the worst customer satisfaction rating of any company or government agency in the country, including the Internal Revenue Service. Comcast "surpass[ed] $20 billion in revenue for the first time" last year, boasted chairman and CEO Brian Roberts in 2005. Their effective local monopoly franchises, deregulation and a set of favorable Federal Communications Commission policies afford Comcast this success.

Comcast ensures their dominance in the market primarily through heavy lobbying designed to ensure a continued stream of local monopolies throughout the nation. But goddamn - a satisfaction rating lower than the IRS. That hurts.
