DEATH PENALTY / Wrongful Convictions

ACTION ITEM: PA

"When innocent people are finally freed from prison, they get nothing from the state for their suffering - even though they are without fault.

Help us bring Pennsylvania into the majority of states that provide money and benefits to the exonerated by asking your legislator to support Compensation Legislation - SB 1274."

September 30, 2016 - "Gary Tyler served over 40 years in prison after being wrongly convicted of murdering a 13-year-old boy in 1974. After being on death row, twice during his sentence, Tyler was finally released this past spring. Prior to his release, Tyler directed a passion play cast only with prisoners from Angola penitentiary in Louisiana, where he was incarcerated. This experience was made into the documentary Cast the First Stone. In their conversation, Tyler tells Robert Scheer how he and the prisoners cast in the play were forever changed by the experience. Tyler discusses how he maintained hope over the years that he would eventually be released. And, Tyler talks about a group of seasoned inmates who protected him when he went to prison as a teenager and helped him survive."

October 14, 2016 - "The Florida Supreme Court ruled Friday that the death penalty cannot be imposed without the unanimous support of a jury, deepening the recent turmoil around capital punishment in a state with a long history of executions.

One of Friday’s decisions, in a case that previously reached the United States Supreme Court and upended Florida’s death penalty system, said that the Eighth Amendment, which forbids cruel and unusual punishment, and Florida state law effectively mandated consensus in capital cases. The court said in a separate case that a new state law, which allowed for the death penalty when 10 of 12 jurors agreed, was unconstitutional."
