An Antioch man who opened his home to children in need, then sexually abused them for years, was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Simon Chavez Sr., 69, pleaded no contest to child molestation counts and was formally sentenced on Dec. 19, records show. The sentence was the result of a plea deal between Contra Costa prosecutors and Chavez Sr., who was originally charged in 2019.

The prosecution was upsetting and scandalous. Originally charged with dozens of offenses, Chavez Sr. — along with his son — were accused of molesting girls in Chavez’s care for years.

At least one of Chavez Sr.’s alleged victims was younger than 10, and one said that molestation started when she was 11 and continued until she was 17.

Adding to the outrage were revelations that Contra Costa County Children and Family Services found evidence of sexual abuse at the home, yet foster children continued to be sent there for another six years, until the victims began speaking up.

Chavez Sr.’s son, Simon Chavez Jr., eventually took a six-year prison sentence after pleading no contest to sexual abuse of a single victim.

In 2013, Chavez Jr., 35, told an investigator with Children and Family Services that he’d inappropriately kissed a teen foster girl under his care, according to the testimony of an Antioch police detective. Both the defendant and the girl denied at the time that anything more had taken place.

A girl known in court records as Jane Doe 1 told police that when she was 11, Chavez Jr. began making sexual advances toward her. The molestation started soon after and lasted until she turned 17 and left the foster home, according to court records.

One day, when Jane Doe 1 was 13, Chavez Sr. walked in on Chavez Jr. raping her, police testified. He began acting angry, grabbed the girl and took her away. But instead of bringing her to safety, Chavez Sr. brought the girl into his own bedroom, she later told police.

“(Chavez Sr.) said that she was going to do with him what she did with Simon Jr.,” Antioch police Detective Kelly Inabnett testified at the 2020 preliminary hearing. From then on, Chavez Sr. also began raping the girl at least once a week for the next four years, Inabnett testified.

The allegations came to light in May 2019, when Jane Doe 1’s relative discovered a note in her purse from Chavez Jr. The note was several years old, addressed to “Honey Bunny” and had references to the girl’s “sexy body” and other suggestive innuendo. The aunt told Children and Family Services, which in turn informed Antioch police, who in turn interviewed every girl who’d lived at the house, Inabnett testified.

Chavez Jr.’s plea deal was finalized in 2022, and he has been released from prison. Chavez Sr. remains in the Contra Costa jail system, pending a transfer to state prison.

Greenfield man sentenced to 40 years for child molestation

The Monterey County District Attorney’s office announced last week that Eleuterio Dominguez Ortiz, 38, from Greenfield was sentenced to 40 years in prison for four counts of forcible lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14.

Ortiz was sentenced Dec.19 by Judge Rafael Vazquez. The offenses are serious and violent felonies and considered strikes under California’s Three Strikes law. Ortiz will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

John Doe reported that Ortiz, a family member, had molested him on at least two separate occasions when he was in the fourth grade. John Doe’s disclosure to law enforcement caused Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2 to disclose that Ortiz had molested them as well when they were very young.

According to research into sexual assault victim behavior, it is very common for victims to delay reporting the sexual abuse, especially when the victim is a minor and has a close relationship with the perpetrator, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials in Huntingdon County say an Oneida Township man has pleaded no contest to two charges in a child molestation case.

Duane Somers was arrested in February following an investigation into allegations that he had sexually abused a young girl over the course of several years.

Huntingdon County District Attorney David Smith confirmed that Somers appeared in court earlier this week, where he entered no contest pleas to charges of indecent assault and corruption of minors --- both misdemeanors.

Police say Somers reportedly admitted to touching the victim inappropriately, on multiple occasions, and that the incidents occurred in multiple counties.

Prosecutors say Somers has been ordered to undergo a sex offender assessment, prior to sentencing.

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - A former U.S. Border Patrol Agent and Army veteran is pleading guilty to charges related to child molestation and indecent exposure to a minor.

Efren Lopez Cornejo will be sentenced in Pima County Superior Court on Thursday after accepting the plea agreement back in October.

The case has been going on for five years but has received no public attention until the News 4 Tucson Investigators uncovered the documents tied to the investigation.

Chief Investigative Reporter Chorus Nylander was able to obtain the plea agreement as well as the indictment against Cornejo and the Marana Police Department incident report.

According to MPD's report, Cornejo was arrested in March 2021 at the headquarters for Border Patrols' Tucson Sector on Swan Road.

Cornejo was part of Border Patrol's highly specialized BORTAC unit, according to close family members. He resigned following his arrest. He is also an Army veteran.

According to MPD Investigators, Cornejo's own daughter reported that since she was as young as 9 years old between 2011 to 2017 her father would enter her room on a regular basis and touch her breasts and groin and force her to help him masturbate. That involved touching his genitals.

She reported to police that this occurred while her mother was away and about every other night if no other adults were around.

Marana Police also interviewed a second victim that said when she was 9 years old, Cornejo had called her to his room and exposed his genitals to her. That victim ran away to her room and locked her door. It is not stated in the report if that victim had any relation to Cornejo.

In April 2021 Cornejo was indicted on 14 counts related to child molestation and indecent exposure.

In October 2024, Cornejo accepted a plea agreement with the County Attorney's Office.

As part of the agreement, he will be sentenced on only two of the original charges. Those charges are: Count 1 child molestation and count 13 for indecent exposure.

A Davis resident was arrested on suspicion of possession of child sexual abuse material.

Detectives with the Yolo County Sheriff's Office started investigating 35-year-old Kevin Masuhara back in July.

In September, the sheriff's office says they served a search warrant at a home along J Street in Davis in connection to the case. Several electronic devices were seized and searched, detectives say.

More than 600 images of child sexual abuse material were found on the devices, detectives allege.

An arrest warrant was issued for Masuhara earlier in the week. Masuhara was then arrested on Christmas Eve, the Yolo County Sheriff's Office says.

The case was a collaboration between Yolo County authorities and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Did I say "all the perps were Dems"?

And don't talk about the governors, they didn't commit the crimes.

Who said they were?

Typing the word "Democrat/s" under all the pictures doesn't count.

Nothing wrong with being into the prosecco already. It's already the New Year somewhere on this planet.
