Dems win special state senate election in traditional Wisconsin GOP district!

Patty Schachtner defeated Republican state Rep. Adam Jarchow for an open state Senate seat Tuesday in an upset victory for struggling Wisconsin Democrats, signaling voter anger toward President Donald Trump that could cost the GOP more legislative seats in the fall elections.

Jarchow tweeted his concession to Schachtner late Tuesday evening, with returns nearly complete across five counties and Schachtner leading by more than 1,600 votes. Schachtner, the St. Croix County medical examiner and a Somerset school board member, had entered the race in northwestern Wisconsin’s traditionally conservative 10th Senate District as the clear underdog.

The district has trended conservative for years. Republican Sheila Harsdorf held the Senate seat for 16 years before she resigned in November to become Gov. Scott Walker’s agriculture secretary and every county in the district voted for Trump in 2016. Jarchow is in the middle of his third term representing the area in the Assembly and had built a formidable base.

A great victory and wise words.

Last night Democratic candidate Patty Schachtner won a stunning victory in Wisconsin. She beat the Republican by 9 points in a district where Trump won by 17 points. The key to victory?

There is an important lesson here for national Democrats: Schachtner is the sort of candidate who can actually defeat GOP incumbents in red congressional districts this fall. She has deep roots in the community, and she is not a fire-breathing liberal.

Her campaign focused not on attacking Trump but fighting the opioid crisis, improving access to health care and bringing good-paying jobs to the region. She didn’t need to talk about the president to benefit from an outpouring of progressive energy and conservative apathy.

She’s the chief medical examiner for St. Croix County, a former EMT and a member of the school board. She is also a trustee for the local food pantry and sits on the board for a community center that helps victims of sexual and domestic violence.

The first paragraph of the biographical page on Schachtner’s website notes that she is “a former member of the Wisconsin Bear Hunters’ Association,” and that “she and her family have enjoyed hunting in Wisconsin for generations.” She’s been married to her husband, Joe, for 39 years, and they have six grown children and nine grandchildren.

apparently the key to victory is to become a conservative party........

So was Jarchow not a conservative? Trustee of food pantry is hardly conservative. Rightys grasping at fake news.

The words in bold need to be nailed to the forehead of every Democrat that spends more time bitching and whining about Trump than focusing on policy.

I agree.....every demmycrat should be pro-life, gun rights, fiscal responsibility, pro-jobs, anti-drug and either be a first responder or a veteran......works for me.....I've always wanted two Republican parties to choose from........

You are pro birth, not pro life. Just get them born. You will take away their healthcare and education happily. But damn, get them born so your cruelty can work. If you were fiscally responsible, you would vote Dem. they are the ones that try and cut the debt. Trump passed a huge tax cut, almost entirely for corporations and the wealthy. He did not cut spending, actually spending more like military and the wall. Can you see what that will do to the debt? The Dems rescued the economy from Bush's near depression. Obama created the jobs he saved the stock market. Trump's policies have not impacted us yet, but it will and it will be ugly.
