Discuss Black History Month (Myth Busting)

Sun Devil

Death and Taxes
I put this thread in the current events section because since we are in the month of February, and since you'll likely see commercials honoring Black History Month, I figure I take the time out to bust some myths and state some facts regarding Black History Month. So in the following I'll bust some myths and I will try to keep up and post other facts regarding African diaspora and African-American history. See the following Myths and Facts:

Myths: "Everyone in the United States is an immigrant."

Fact: African-Americans being descendants of African slaves and Native Americans are the only two cultures that never willfully migrated to the New World. Although the Native Americans thousands of years ago via being the descendants of a group that crossed Asia Minor during the ice age and across the frozen ocean later settled in the New World their descendants are thus indigenous to the land called America (United States). Africans on the other hand were forcefully brought over here via slavery.

Myth: "Africans sold their own into slavery"

Fact: The above statement is a classical stock argument many whites unfortunately use to pacify slavery in the United States. First and foremost Africa is not a country and the slaves the Africans that "sold" other Africans were tribal enemies, just as the Greeks and Romans selling "their own" and since Africa is composed of different countries they were no more "selling their own" than the Europeans who "sold their own" into slavery. African slavery and Trans-Atlantic slavery are two different incidents. Many people who use the "Africans sold their own" argument is what is known as the Arab Trader Argument where:

"It excuses an evil of one’s own past by finding the same sort of evil done by others. Whites sold slaves, but Africans and Arab traders did too!"

Myth: "Black History is anti-white"

Fact: Black History although it's credited for only one month, is actually United States American history due to the fact that those that contributed to the wealth of the U.S were American citizens. Black History is important because it highlights the contributions of people of color. A lot of people do not realize that many facets of society highlights Caucasian achievements or European achievements most notably Christopher Columbus yet very little is discussed about African-American achievements. That is why many cultures in the U.S have different organizations and channels, and clubs that are affiliated with specific diverse cultures because America for far too long has been grounded on the foundation of Eurocentrism as well as ethnocentrism.

Thanks

Side note:

Mexican Americans residing in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, California and others states didn't migrate here, either.

So since Africa isn't a country and is a continent does that mean we should sot calling them African Americans? I mean I don't use the term but you raise a good point. I prefer negro

Does your first "Fact/Myth" also cover those Europeans, that were brought here forcefully and later Chinese women that were brought as sex slaves?

Your second part would seem to suggest that Africans WEREN'T selling other Africans into slavery.
Now add in that this could also be seen as a way to denounce the idea of African-Americans.

Thirdly: Does your comments suggest that there shouldn't be a problem with Mexican History Month, or German History Month, Irish, Chinese, - how about a White History Month?

The answer to that is the last sentence of his Facts/Myths post.

Yes, I saw his reference to "organizations and channels, and clubs", which are different from a Month; unless you have a way of showing that Blacks are unable to also have organizations and channels, and clubs.

I was referring to this sentence: "That is why many cultures in the U.S have different organizations and channels, and clubs that are affiliated with specific diverse cultures because America for far too long has been grounded on the foundation of Eurocentrism as well as ethnocentrism."

The argument is basically what we are taught is white history.

It must have been the schools you attended; because it was never part of my education and personally I think that you just presented was and is part of the continuing "myth" that way to many people are more then willing to promote, so that they can continue the racism.

In response to Sardonic:

Regarding the history of the Southwest of Mexicans and them being so-called "indigenous" Wikipedia (I don't like to use this that search engine)

See the Following:

"Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, California, Colorado, and Wyoming were part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain and later formed part of the newly independent Mexican Republic. The Spaniards first entered the region in the late 16th century, starting small settlements in what is now New Mexico.

In California, Spanish Franciscan friars formed a string of missions designed to convert the Indians to Christianity. Along with the system of forts and land grants to favored associates of the king, the missions enabled small-scale Spanish settlement of the coastal California by a few hundred Spanish immigrants. Very small Spanish-speaking settlements were established near missions & forts in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas by the mid 18th century."

To answer your comment

African-American is a political term that addresses the people who have African Ancestry with American origin.

Holy carp, somebody call the scientists. they've got it all wrong.

Also, dig the vintage goodness.

To answer your comment

African-American is a political term that addresses the people who have African Ancestry with American origin.

A black lady friend of mine wrote the other they used the term African-American to describe (non American) black people when she was visiting France. She was even surprised by it.

Does your first "Fact/Myth" also cover those Europeans, that were brought here forcefully and later Chinese women that were brought as sex slaves? (1)

Your second part would seem to suggest that Africans WEREN'T selling other Africans into slavery.
Now add in that this could also be seen as a way to denounce the idea of African-Americans. (2)

Thirdly: Does your comments suggest that there shouldn't be a problem with Mexican History Month, or German History Month, Irish, Chinese, - how about a White History Month? 3)

(1)

I'm not talking about Europeans though am I? I'm talking about the founding of this nation. The early settlers didn't forcefully use European slaves did they? They used African slaves not Europeans who prior to the use of African slaves were indentured servants.

(2)

I just explained it to you clearly...Africa is not a fucking country so the comments "Africans selling Africans" is moot because slavery wasn't practiced in every single country in Africa. So if you're referring to some Africans selling Africans then you have to specify the countries that sold slaves to Europeans. Secondly, Africans sold their enemies to Europeans much like the Greeks selling other Greeks to slavery. As I noted above you're using the Arab slave trade argument. Excusing one evil for another by highlighting the evil of another culture.

(3)

There is no problem of other cultures who are not represented by the majority to have their holidays or cultural celebrations. That is what this country is about.

Well it also depends on the perspective of others. Some African Dutch argue that when they come and live in America they ought to be referred to as "African-American" since they are from Africa, but I continually argue that the Dutch, French, British, or any other culture that are descendants from early colonialist are not truly African because they are not the indigenous people of Africa nor do they have any cultural lineage to the indigenous people of Africa. Blacks here in the states call themselves Africans more along the lines of their affinity with the Africans along with trying to salvage any lost history of themselves and because black Americans are truly descendants of Africans of course due to centuries of slavery and rape genetically many American blacks are not entirely African, but you get the point.

As you can see "Mexicans were arguably not indigenous to the U.S"

You seem to be missing the part that those now known as "Mexicans" are the result of those same Spaniards mating with the "indigenous" people.

Mexico didn't officially become Mexico, until 2012.

Let me answer the continuous question that many whites (including some of my white friends) have regarding "White History Month" White television etc.

Whites are represented everyday, not just because whites are the majority in the United States but the most politically and socially influential group in the United States. Not only are whites in the United States are the most represented group when it comes to the history of the United States, but media wise, whites are the most represented group. That is why you have channels like BET, Telemundo, and other ethnic channels because cultures want to be represented as these cultures in comparison to the dominant majority. The reason you don't have a WET or White Entertainment Television is because whites are the most represented group on television. If anyone here has objections please I'd like to see your argument.

If you are black, from Africa and move to France (so you have no roots in the U.S.) would you expect to be called African-American? That's what my friend brought up and I have no idea what the correct terminology would be.

Ok then which Mexicans are you referring Mestizo's?

1. Yes
They came as slaves; vast human cargo transported on tall British ships bound for the Americas. They were shipped by the hundreds of thousands and included men, women, and even the youngest of children.

Whenever they rebelled or even disobeyed an order, they were punished in the harshest ways. Slave owners would hang their human property by their hands and set their hands or feet on fire as one form of punishment. They were burned alive and had their heads placed on pikes in the marketplace as a warning to other captives.

We don’t really need to go through all of the gory details, do we? We know all too well the atrocities of the African slave trade.

But, are we talking about African slavery? King James II and Charles I also led a continued effort to enslave the Irish. Britain’s famed Oliver Cromwell furthered this practice of dehumanizing one’s next door neighbor.

The Irish slave trade began when James II sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.

Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white

2. Then it would also be incorrect to say that America was involved in slaves, seeing as how it was only a specific number of States.

3. Then why would everyone get so upset, every time a "white" organization tries to exclude those of color?
