Those who parade their particular fairy in the sky belief cannot support it. They, like most religious people, do not know - or cannot admit - why they believe. They just do as their parents told them or what a particular section of society they admire does. Either that or they are scared shitless by the unknown and will grab anything as a comfort blanket.
Not many gods would go for that, I think.

The muslim god believes that mohammed rocks socks. And that all the bullshit mohammed said was valid. That's why another book was needed to be made, because more stuff had to be said.

The christian god said nothing about mohammed one day coming to earth from his heaven ufo. But I know you want to suggest they are the same, but you can't just have one religion say they are the same while the other religion disagrees with that notion.

religion turns otherwise intelligent rational people into idiots. Religion also infests our political discourse. It's because of religion that we have problems with gay marriage, stem cell research, science funding, teaching kids "intelligent design," the list goes on. Religion is a disease.

Religious people do not deserve to be thought of as capable adults. They are mental children that believe in fairy tales. I am concerned as far as I wouldn't want people that believed in the hollow earth to be considered well thinking individuals in our society. If religious people were marginalized and made to feel like the simpletons they in fact are, there would be no problem.

'Religion' does all you say and more. However you cannot label the religious as stupid or simpletons. They are simply naive and in naivete lies a certain innocence.
It is the task of those of us who can see how religion is used and why otherwise intelligent people 'fall' for it, to show by example and to quietly, without too many insults, demonstrate how the progress of man has been stifled and how it holds prisoner those who believe its various untruths.
To jeer and catcall does not show anyone that those for whom religion has no place are any better than the worst tele evangelist or magic snake charmer or destroyer of nations' histories.

That's not always the case. Naivete certainly makes the task of indoctrinating children much easier, but it doesn't explain the conversion of reasonably-intelligent adults.

What makes religion appealing to adults is the notion of superiority, specialness and the guarantee of a reward for being exceptional, that their god and belief system is the only superior and 'correct' one.

I disagree. I think we all have our own roles to fill. This is actually a topic that comes up a lot. Hitchens and to some extent dawkins were always criticized for how harsh they were/are, but at the end of the day, they got some people enraged enough to "do research to prove them wrong" and in doing so some realized that hitchens and dawkins were right.

Sometimes you need a big kick in the ass, and you need to be immediately put on the defensive. Othertimes, you need to be coddled a bit more. We have our hitchen's and we have our sagans. Both are valuable.
But if everyone "played nice" we would be quickly ignored. NO one would pay attention.

Muslims, Christians, Mormons (who are Christians), Jews all believe in the same God/entity. They all believe in the God of Abraham as the one true God. They differ on stories passed along from there.

The God that orders people to murder others in his name, is not the same God as Christians have, sorry. You can claim they are the same God, and the Muslims claim them to be the same God, but Muslims also claim Jesus was Muslim. When you go back to early Islam, you will find that "Allah" means "The God" to distinguish it from the other Gods they worshiped. After Muhammad, the story was developed that Allah was the God of Abraham. It's like claiming an Elvis impersonator is really Elvis because he sang Elvis songs and dressed like him. If you wish to believe it, that's fine, it's just not the truth.
