does Patraeus plan on running in 2012?

He won't run if things do not improve in Iraq. It would all tie to Iraq, the only way he could even gain a nomination is if he created some success out of the current situation.

Alternate scenerio:

Things are so f'd in Iraq they ain't never going to be made right. The right knows this. They are running out the clock so the pull out, or "admittance" comes on the next President's watch, who many of them believe will be a democrat. The right wing machine spend the four years of the dem's presidency doing what they do best; creating the faux narrative. If only we had followed the "Patreaus plan" Instead, the Democrats, cut and run. Now there is chaos in the middle east and America isn't safe. We need someone with balls to be President in 2012.

Who's that man?

Bush! His newfound popularity will cause the 28th Amendment to pass with ease allowing just Bush to run for as many terms as possible.

:D

(J/k... It will be Ron Paul!)

Yeah, sure, Ron Paul.

Maybe Jeb Bush. But I can see it playing out that way, with Petraus jumping into the race.

We'll have a royal family or two....

Why is it that whenever someone writes of the sacking of Mosul, the fact that the police and the army either changed sides or abandoned their posts, NO ONE EVER says a word about the inept running of that sector by Patraeus? 41 million ($40,000,000) dollars of military equipment VANISHED! WTF!?!? How is that not an offense worthy of being relieved of command? How does that not "go on your permenant record"? How do you skate the responsibility of placing the very people that ran off with all that shit in the position that allowed them to do that very thing?

Yall read about the Sheik in Anbar getting blown less than 2 weeks after meeting with Bush ?
Yep Anbar is doing just peachy.

Those are excellent questions. The press seems to go into a collective swoon over Generals. Sometimes I wonder if it isn't as simple as this; most journalists were big geeks in high school, you can tell it by looking at them. And here comes The General. He's big. He's tough. He's a total jock. The geeks melt and fall into a swoon. If they swoon enough, maybe the ultimate cool kid will put his arm around them.

Yep...having lunch with bush, and getting yourself photographed shaking his hand, probably not the smartest move in Iraq.

It looks like he wants to be president.

What Patreus' Commanding Officer thinks of him:

""Ass-kissing little chickenshit" -- Admiral Fallon, CENTCOM Commander

In sharp contrast to the lionisation of Gen. David Petraeus by members of the U.S. Congress during his testimony this week, Petraeus's superior, Admiral William Fallon, chief of the Central Command (CENTCOM), derided Petraeus as a sycophant during their first meeting in Baghdad last March, according to Pentagon sources familiar with reports of the meeting.

Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be "an ass-kissing little chickenshit" and added, "I hate people like that", the sources say. That remark reportedly came after Petraeus began the meeting by making remarks that Fallon interpreted as trying to ingratiate himself with a superior.

That extraordinarily contentious start of Fallon's mission to Baghdad led to more meetings marked by acute tension between the two commanders. Fallon went on develop his own alternative to Petraeus's recommendation for continued high levels of U.S. troops in Iraq during the summer [...]

The policy context of Fallon's extraordinarily abrasive treatment of his subordinate was Petraeus's agreement in February to serve as front man for the George W. Bush administration's effort to sell its policy of increasing U.S. troop strength in Iraq to Congress.

In a highly unusual political role for an officer who had not yet taken command of a war, Petraeus was installed in the office of Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, in early February just before the Senate debated Bush's troop increase. According to a report in The Washington Post Feb. 7, senators were then approached on the floor and invited to go McConnell's office to hear Petraeus make the case for the surge policy.

Fallon was strongly opposed to Petraeus's role as pitch man for the surge policy in Iraq adopted by Bush in December as putting his own interests ahead of a sound military posture in the Middle East and Southwest Asia -- the area for which Fallon's CENTCOM is responsible.

Wow. But, who gets promoted in corporations the fastest? Ass-kissing little chickenshits. So I guess this shouldn't be a surprise, but it is a little surprising that the guy just came out and said that to him. Pretty cool too. Well, Fallon ain't going nowhere. You just don't when you lay down the cards like that. It makes people uncomfortable.
