Don't buy White House spin, at this point Congress must salvage integrity of US

This is an absolute watershed moment in American democracy. Whatever happens to President Trump is far less important than what happens to the structure of our federal government. If we’re going to have a sustainable democracy, we cannot have a White House with unlimited power to mow down norms and laws.

One casualty of the law-eroding phenomenon — thus far — is the whistleblower complaint identifying, among other things, Trump’s July 2019 phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. We now know from the White House’s release of summary notes of that conversation that Trump asked Zelenskiy to dig for dirt on his political rival, Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter. The notes indicate that this conversation occurred after the Ukrainian president mentioned his country’s need for nearly $400 million in promised military aid that Trump was personally blocking.

It is scary. Once rules are deleted, it is tough to bring them back. What will the next president do? Will he reject all that power and say let's bring back the separation of powers. Let's make the president responsible to congress and follow the rules? That is not human nature. A person with enough ego to run for president is usually full of themselves and are reluctant to give back the powers they see as theirs now. I can handle it. I am not a crook like Trump. But someday we will get a person as bad as Trump is at his core and he will be much smarter. Then he walks in with the powers of a dictator handed to him.
