DRAFT

doniston

Aint I a cutie? HEH HEH
A few minutes ago, on themChris Mathews show, NBC, the question was asked: WILL THE US HAVE TO REINSTITUTE THE DRAFT? I wouldrelly like to know what you mall think.

I happen to be inthe position of Yes, or NO, depending:

If we don't get out of Iraq, YES.

If we get smart and get out, perhaps from both Iraq and Afganistand, then NO.

How about you folks???

Hell no. Screw this fascist government which is actively seeking to bifurcate the world into haves and haves nots and create a technological matrix to keep their power indefinitely.

Screw their Regionalism, screw their globalism. Screw their fascism. I abhor their lies more and more each day.

(I've been watching this thing on the FBI vs. John Lennon and Im really pissed )

Complete with fascist apologist G.Gordon Liddy. I can't believe I used to like that guy.
Angry nresponses if I ever heard one (or two) and seemed to answer just what you wanted to happen rather than what is necessary to happen, thenks for nothing.

Hopefully others will offer more straighforward answers.

I agree with Don, unless we go much more mercenary....
The Repubs have set it up nicely so the Dems will have to be the ones to do it though...

Well...

I see the writing on the wall...It appears as if from all intelligence analyists that Iran will be dealt with approximately Jan 2009 or slightly before...so I would say yes a draft is probably on the horizon...the troops cannot continue with the number available and being tied up in Afghanistan and Iraq...like it or not this appears to be comming!

It will depend on whether Iran is invaded or simply bombed. If we are foolish enough to invade then we will need a draft. We will also need to put our nation on war footing, as the current problems in Iraq aren't numbers of bodies able to send, it is due to equipment attrition, we'd need to manufacture them.

True enough....

However I still see the writing on the wall for the draft...and I believe Israel will start the bombing then we will supply the troops, money and equipment...The only plus would be maybe a resurge in US manufacturing!:dunno:

I just can't see it being a good idea. There are better ways to deal with their supposed near-ability to create nuclear weapons.

I fully agree
So do I. Invading Iran would be, not quite suicidal, but immensely stupid. Many Americans don't realize just how big Iran is. Geographically, it's nearly four times the size of Iraq and has more than three times the population. If we're stretched to the breaking point by the occupation of Iraq . . . well, you do the math.

There are several questions here, really. Will we return to conscription? Is a draft a good idea or is it regressive and unjust? If the draft has been historically unjust, is there any way to make it truly fair? And so on.

Personally, I don't think there will be a draft in the last two years of the Bushidency, UNLESS the vegetable decides to invade Iran. If he does that then a draft will be necessary: there's no other way they'll be able to fill out the ranks, as it were.

Is the draft a good idea? Depends on your perspective. Conscription is almost certainly bad for the military as such. I've never yet met a career officer who wanted a return to the draft. OTOH, I think that a draft would make us, as a nation, less willing to enter into wars of adventure, such as Iraq, Panama and Grenada. And, if we could somehow magically eliminate all of the deferments and exemptions by which the privileged keep their children out of service, then a draft might almost be worthwhile in its own right.

eI'm not in favor of a strictly military draft but I can se the string benefites of a draft to service of the country, (for vuirtually all youngsters. ) in other oards each youngster wiuld put in a certain amount of time in the service, maybe military, maybe something like peace corp, etc. deferment until completion of eduction would be reasonable. depending on the circumstances.

I stated quite clearly what I objected to in your post

Further, have you no memory? You are the one who mentioned G Gordon liddy, not I.
