Elizabeth Edwards: Jesus, She should be running for Prez

I haven't heard Biden, Clinton, Dodd, even Obama be this clear and focused, on what it really comes down to:

Interview with Elizabeth Edwards

-The Progressive: Is there a split between "new Democrats" and progressives, or what Paul Wellstone used to call "the Democratic wing of the Democratic party?"

-Elizabeth Edwards: John gave a speech at the DNC meeting saying we don’t need to reinvent our party; we just need to remember who we are. And who we are is the party of working people, including people who want to work and can't, [and] people who have worked and are trying to retire. That's who we are and have always been. Sometimes we need to be reminded of that.

It's easy to get misled with the DLC mantra "love the worker, love the employer." The employers can pretty much take care of themselves. So as a party our job is to give voice to those people who don’t have a powerful voice. Unless that translates into votes or contributions, it turns out a lot of Democrats just ignore these people. They use language about working class people, but they are not out there with them. They use language about the immorality of poverty, but they are not out there. ...

And so the difference, it seems to me, is not between old and new Democrats but between actual Democrats and rhetorical Democrats. Sometimes it seems we have these beliefs but it turns out it's like a Hollywood set: It's all facade and there's no guts behind it.

This story is purely antedotal but I think it represents the thoughts of a lot of people and explains why Edwards cannot gain any traction in his campaign.

I was talking to a gentleman in our office yesterday. He's a black man, went to Yale and UCLA MBA so he's a well educated dude. Anyhow he's a big Democrat. He was talking to a group of us and he asked if anyone had seen that YouTube video of Edwards playing with his hair in the mirror before one of his speeches. He said his brother had sent him the clip.

The guy continued yeah and that rich guy with the $400 hair cuts claims to be a man of the people. Yeah right. Someone mentioned the new home he's building and this guy laughed even harder.

Now I agree one must not necessarily be poor to care about poverty as an issue and want to work to fix it. In John Edwards case he just does not have any 'street cred' to him and people can easily pick up on that. And that's why his campaign is floundering even though he's talking about an issue that's very important to the Democratic base.

You should have told him that he is absolutely right, and advised him to vote for the poor guy who is running for President, this way he's have 'street cred' and would know how it is poor and on the streets.

Which one is that again? I always forget his name.

she has twice the balls and integrity of her hubby

But the truth is the dems are also doing nothing to stop globalization, the force that is destroying the american middle class. So she's actually a big, full of crap liar.

Like I said one doesn't have to be poor to be able to speak out on poverty. But Edwards just doesn't have the credibility with the audience. Do you think Hillary and Obama are that much better than Edwards that he can only poll at 10%?

It's not a matter of you don't have to be poor to speak out on poverty, you can't be poor and speak on poverty. Nobody cares what the poor have to say. And they never have.

You do know all of the cool black people though Cawacko, I have to say. You always have the best stories about black people you know getting the joke about the libs, and spreading the word. I would love to meet some of these guys, just to find out if they have ever even heard of FDR and if they think he was some "poor guy" who cut his own hair.

Do I think Hillary and Obama are that much better than Edwards? No, I don't think they are better at all. I think they are worse. I think that name recognition and money play the biggest roles, and so does media. I think that there has been a concentrated effort on the part of corporate media to belittle Edwards. I watched hardball the other night after the dem debate, and every single person they had on, including Mattehws, claimed that edwards was jumping up and down like a little boy saying "don't forget about me don't forget about me". When in fact, it is Edwards who has been driving the debates, and forcing the other dems into health care plans etc.

And it's no coincidence.

What is this "street cred" you're talking about? Edwards grew up working class, and on his own merit and hard work, made himself rich.

I don't think many of the first tier candidates in either party grew up working class.

Playing with his hair? Do you know how many stupid, silly things you or I have done throughout life, that if videotaped, would make us look like morons?

Why, right now I'm picking my nose and scratching my balls, while belching!

The guy is a Democrat. He's not voting for any Republican he's just not supporting Edwards. I was just offering a story which I feel sums up the reason Edwards cannot gain traction while running on an issue that's important to his party.

Don't get mad at me for saying it get mad at your fellow Democrats who say they are going to vote for Hillary and Obama and not Edwards.

You know exactly what I'm talking about when I speak of credibility. It's not something that can be faked.

If the guy thinks that someone who is poor is going to start talking about poverty and anyone is going to listen, then he is stupid.

Sure it can be faked.

Movie actor and DC lobbyist Fred Thompson put on a plaid shirt, and drove around Tennessee in a pickup truck in 1994. Selling himself as a regular guy. That's how he got elected to the senate. Morons fell for it. You don't think trust fund baby Bush, sold himself as a regular guy?

If your saying that Edwards is rich, and your average regular joe can figure it out - I agree.

and why is that? his background is JUST as blue collar as Obama's and way MORE blue collar than Hillary's. His "street cred" ought to be about his actual "street" credibility, not how some media spinner portrays it.

WHo GIVES a fuck if he spends a lot of cash dollars on haircuts? It's HIS cash. He earned it. And he started out the son of a millworker and he succeeded. If that ain't the goddamn American dream, I do not know what is.

And John Edwards is NOT my favorite candidate...but he is FAR from my LEAST favorite candidate which would be Gravel followed by little Dennis followed by Hillary.

Bottom line: you don't have to be poor to be FOR the poor. You don't have to be unemployed to fight for the unemployed.

You don't have to be personally disenfranchised to be an advocate for the disenfranchized.

And you don't have to have a little, shriveled up pecker like Doniston, to feel for the old foggies! Cawacko, how about a little love?

You go Mainman! You got me all riled up now!
