Biggest jobless claims rise since February
Increase of 28,000 in latest week was much bigger than expected

WASHINGTON - The number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits shot up by the largest amount since early February, a far bigger increase than had been expected.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that applications for jobless benefits hit 337,000 last week, an increase of 28,000 from the previous week. That was the biggest one-week surge since jobless claims jumped 42,000 the week of Feb. 10.

The increase was four times larger than the gain of 6,000 that economists had been expecting and could be a sign that the labor market is starting to weaken under the impact of a severe downturn in housing and the credit crisis that jolted financial markets in August.

The 337,000 total claims for the week was the highest level since a similar number of claims were filed on Aug. 25. Government analysts said that part of last week’s big rise probably reflected trouble in adjusting the numbers for normal seasonal changes at the start of a new quarter, a time when claims often spike.

The four-week average for claims edged up to 316,500, the highest level in four weeks. For the week ending Oct. 6, 45 states and territories saw claims increase while eight reported declines.

Analysts have been expecting jobless claims to start posting increases, reflecting the economic blows that have occurred from the steepest housing slump in 16 years and a severe credit crunch.

If they had all just gone to college or been traders.
Everybody knows that only those without college degrees lose their jobs. :clink:

Why don't you go bowling? lol

I love that one. WTF? What is so horrible about bowling?

aparently is is not part of the sophisticated crowd.
We do not have very much Polo or tennis here in the sticks though :D
Well the horse people elitists do Polo stuff and drink mint julips ;)

Heh. You can always count on the lefties to post the bad news.

Yes there is a housing crunch, you think you guys would be celebrating that seeing as you all fight to try and stop "urban sprawl" (ie: stop allowing more houses for Americans to build to live in).

Urban sprawl will get to be a real issue when gas goes way up in price. Talk about a drop in house values in remote surburbia....
This country is mostly built around cheap gas and transportation......
Unlike europe....

And you can always count on neocon idiots to keep insisting "things are great" despite all evidence to the contrary. Outsourcing jobs as fast as you can has an impact on american joblessness. Can you understand that simple truth?

But they are not outsourcing as fast as they can, the bust here is in construction for housing, something that cannot be outsourced.

I'm not a neocon and I invite you to read over the facts.

1. Government statisticians reckon that outsourced jobs are responsible for well under 1% of those signed up as unemployed.

2. We have economically, provably resulted in a net gain of jobs here when measuring countries outsourcing here to our outsourcing to other countries:

Remember this is from a magazine that endorsed Clinton over Dole. So it can't be smeared as neocon or right-wing...

Outsourcing is not a concern...at all. You must have noticed that after Kerry lost in 2004, the Dems pretty much shut up about it?
Because the Democrats always need a bogeyman when out of power.
In 1984 it was the big bad Japanese taking over all our companies.
In 1988 it was robots and machines displacing American workers.
In 1992 it was Mexico stealing all our jobs.
In 1996 Clinton's numbers were good, so no bogeyman.
In 2000 After 8 years of Democrat rule, a bogeyman would probably make Gore look bad, so none here either.
In 2004, a Republican (Bush) in office so bogeyman is China and India stealing all our jobs.
In 2006, Dems were poised to win back seats with other problems so no need to create a bogeyman.

Someday they'll conjure another, they'll have to find a new villain, my guess is the Saudis.
Who will fall for this again? I think regular Americans are smart enough not to keep falling for the same fearmongering crap.

Smart post and nothing wrong with cheap transportation, as we country folk can attest to.

Newflash. Clinton is a neocon, or at the very least, an america destroying globalist. Nobody wants olam ha ba.

It is a concern. The quality of jobs suck. Basically in business the motto is "what's the fewest number of americans we can hire". This is the truth and you know it.

Cue Superfreak to come on here in a rage, to insist that the middle class hasn't been stagnating.

I don't know why, "fuck you gerber" makes me laugh out loud everytime I see it.
I do not know why the hatred of baby food either....
Or considering the source, it might involve small rodents.

NO! wait that was the troll of the troll , oops.

I don't think you have the skills to take that job from me yet.

It doesn't really take too much skill to predict that SF will be charging in here enraged over something or other on any given day. He's excitable. Total type A. Hopefully he is watching his cholesterol.

The skill comes in knowing the script and where the cue is actually called. Early cues build a temporary excitement but if used too often in a thread will lose your audience's trust. A good Thread Director knows to use the early cue rarely.

Now, Action!
