First Baby Boomer Files For Social Security Benefits Today

WOW, seriously, it begins today...I guess we just have to wait and see if things get as bad as they have stated it will.

the problem will be paying back the few trillion in SS surplus that the govt has spent on other things. This will have to be paid back from general revenue....

Uh oh....

WASHINGTON — Kathleen Casey-Kirschling filed for early retirement Monday, becoming the first baby boomer to start collecting Social Security.

Born one second after midnight in January 1946, the retired teacher leads the way for as many as 80 million individuals who will qualify for the retirement payout.

"I think I'm just lucky to be at the top of the boom. I'm just one of many many millions and am blessed to have been in this generation and really blessed and to take my Social Security now," Casey-Kirschling said during a ceremony held at the National Press Club featuring Social Security Commissioner Michael J. Astrue.

Casey-Kirschling said she supports anyone who wants to collect retirement benefits whenever he or she is eligible to take them. But many Washington officials and American workers are wondering if Social Security will be able to support them.

David Walker, the comptroller general of the Government Accountability Office, Congress' legislative arm, warned the Social Security system will soon have more recipients coming than it can afford to pay out.
I'm at the cusp and screwed. Beware those that come after 1955.

Presidents and politicians come and go , WE are stuck with the problem.

I'm more worried about my boy in the oval office. ;)

The problem will get fixed if the right politicians are in place to fix it. Here's a hint: "fixing" it by scrapping it to the tune of $4 Trillion and replacing it with a privatized system isn't the answer.

In any case the spent surplus must be paid back, that is a matter of embezzlement and theft if not paid back.

As a 'senior' member here, I really could care less or expect more from the government regarding SS or medicare or whatever it's called. I just want my money back, that I've already paid in. I doubt, seriously, that I'll get it.

I feel even more sorry for you 'youngins', you will probably not get back all that witholding. However, at least here, most of you won't mind.

Tell you what, abolish it in 5 years and I won't even be mad about the 4 years I've already paid into it.

Good luck. Like I said, I won't be pissed it they don't do what they said, way back when. Just give me back what I've paid into it, for the past 35 years. No interest, just my principal. Is that not fair? Guess what, the government will say that's foolish, guess again.

I do not really need SS, but will need the medicare I am sure. As will most retirees. Most retirees wthat have any health ins benefits after retirement automatically convert to medicare when the become eligable anyway. Just a common way that industry shifts their burden off on the taxpayers.

My take, we in the 50 and so crowd, should start singing loudly that all we want is our money back.Screw interest and medicare. Just our money to buy what we can. Anything more longterm is a dream, hoping for it, a nightmare.

Medicare will be here , It pretty much has to be. Although it might be merged with some form of national health care or something.

:P

Vouchers are a welfare program just like any other welfare program. They're not meant to cancel out the taxes a parent who sends a child to private school pays, their meant to compensate the parents up to the cost of what would usually be spent educating their child in a public school anyway.

When he can't support his position in an argument he randomly jumps to another issue. I don't know if it's his age or his ignorance, but he's really not worth debating with. It's just fun to trade retorts with him.

What about free trade?

WHy do you hate mexicans?
