Florida Stupidity Possible Explanation: More Lead Pipes Than Other States

Diversity Makes Greatness
"Some 9.2 million lead pipes carry water into homes across the U.S., with more in Florida than any other state, according to a new Environmental Protection Agency survey that will dictate how billions of dollars to find and replace those pipes are spent."

Florida has most lead pipes in U.S., EPA survey finds

Is this why Florida has been moving to the right?

It doesn't make any sense for average people to vote for policy that favors billionaires.

Had no idea Florida leads the country in lead water pipes, DeSantis must be proud to be number one in that?!!

Florida has mostly newer pipes compared to places like the Northeast... How could they mess up so badly?

This is possibly one of the stupidest memes ever posted on this board

Florida has no state income tax. Unlike say, California and New York, it doesn't tax sales on the internet. Florida's "Tax freedom day" comes in mid April ahead of more than 50% of states.

Florida has a much lower rate of unemployment claims than blue states, while having more cash on hand to cover claims made than states like California and New York--where unemployment claims are some of the highest in the nation. So, while Florida does pay near the bottom in unemployment, they also clearly are not subsidizing grifters, the lazy, etc., like California and New York do.

Florida's healthcare system is ranked pretty close to California and New York in quality, and the degree of socialize care is fucking irrelevant.

The horror!

With the outlier of the Parkland shooting, it appears to me that the rust belt and cities with large Black populations are the problem with mass shootings...

Virtually every spring in Florida once ran crystal clear. Not that long ago. Sprawl has rendered nearly most of it polluted with fertilizer and sewage during just the last few decades, as Republicans have taken over Florida government.

"[Blue] That had been the color of the water – flowing over white sand – at Ichetucknee Springs, which has long been a rite of outdoor exuberance for students driving a little more than 30 minutes from the University of Florida in Gainesville.

The Ichetucknee and its run remain a Florida paradise, a visual feast of wetlands embracing a meandering stream.

But the water’s primary color is inky dark from algae.

“It just about makes me weep,” said Jopling, who was born in Lake City and is a UF law graduate who practices in Gainesville. His group is challenging the state’s cleanup plans for the springs.

The suspected chief source of pollution is the extensive agriculture surrounding the springs. The Ichetucknee Alliance contends that the state’s cleanup plan does not go far enough."

Algae plaguing Florida's iconic springs triggers major legal battle

DeSantis is too busy fighting culture wars to work on this major, major problem for the State.

He is really pathetic as a leader.

Silver Springs was the beautiful attraction where 'Creature From The Last Lagoon' was filmed, along with many other TV shows and movies.

That was back when the bottom was sandy and the water was beautiful.

Not any more. Now sand can hardly be seen at the bottom. It's all covered with algae.

All those streams flow into the Gulf and the Atlantic. The Gulf doesn't get as much water flow to carry it away as the Atlantic. It's shallower off the Florida Gulf Coast than it is off the Atlantic coast. The Gulf off Florida is now plagued with an algae bloom of it's own called Red Tide. That is washing dead fish up on the beach and turning tourists away.

Battles with Disney, falling down on keeping the water clean. DeSantis is showing what kind of president he would be. In a word, terrible. Not good for business, either!

This is not leadership. This is power-monger-ship. Republicans should be ashamed.

Stop drinking the water, Ron. It's changed. Something needs to be done.

Lead pipes must be reported in miles to mean anything.

I care most about people effected, not miles of pipe effected. Reporting miles is like reporting the murder rate by distance the bullet travelled, not number killed.

no. you misunderstand. the pipes are the independant variable. they are not supposed to change. we're not testing how the number of brain damaged people makes pipe into lead.

We are testing the number of homes that have lead pipes. It would be a little better if we tested the number of people served by those pipes, but it still is what I care about. You want to know the number of miles those led pipes represent.

Let's say we have a hundred homes with one hundredth of a mile of lead pipes in one state, and one house with ten miles of lead pipes in another state. Which is worse? The second state has ten miles of led pipes, and the first state has only one mile of lead pipes. But, the first state has a hundred homes served by those lead pipes, where as the second state only has one.

THe Northeast has water lines that go back 200 years. That is going to be a real problem. Florida has massive amounts of new construction, how could they have messed this up so badly?

no.

wrong.

you're measuring how lead pipes effect dumbness.

we're both wrong.

the best we can do is a correlational study. in which variables are not modified but data is gathered and statistics run.

'Look the other way, cross my hand' inspections?

You are so correct. Everyone I know who has bought a house in Florida has found a few years later that everything is falling apart. The tradespeople are terrible, and can get away with anything.

The drinking water supply lines were typically put in by developers. They would be motivated to cut costs. Lead piping was cheap when a lot of the older subdivisions were built. City and county councils were motivated to grow the tax base, welcoming to expansion plans. There was a lot of money to be made creating housing and shopping for retirees who wanted to move to Florida. Still is.

What's the explanation for someone being stupid enough to think people can change genders based on their "feelings"? Maybe that's just organic stupidity.
