Terrorist Attack In NEW YORK CITY
A man armed with a meat cleaver attacked a police officer in midtown Manhattan Thursday before being shot by officers, officials said. There are reports that the man was yelling “ALLAHU AKBAR.”
The attack happened near Madison Square Garden.
The New York Post reports that the suspect, identified as 32-year-old career criminal Akram Joudeh, started yelling and screaming at 30th and Broadway when he realized his white Nissan Altima had been booted, witnesses and law enforcement sources said.
When cops approached his car, he brandished a meat cleaver and started swinging it at them. He then ran away, and cops chased him to 32nd Street.
There, an off-duty detective who’d stepped in to assist the cops pushed him up against a UPS truck, at which point Akram struck him in the head with the cleaver, according to the sources.
Officers opened fired, hitting the suspect multiple times, the sources said. A bullet grazed one of the officers in the back, sources said. A third officer was also injured in the chaos, according to sources.
The off-duty detective, who works in the 19th Precinct, was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he’s undergoing surgery.
Two other injured officers were taken to Bellevue Hospital as well. The suspect, who was described by sources as an “emotionally disturbed person,” was also taken to the medical center, and is in critical condition.
“We heard the gun shots and saw all these cops running and then we all ducked down and went into lockdown mode,” said Franchesca Benitez, manager at clothing store Mandees.
