From the article

"Football is a spectacle where excessive violence is mundane, because hits that cause injuries are a constant occurrence, and spectators are desensitized to it. Consumers of the sport assume players will withstand any bodily affront, so they are shocked when a player’s physical limits are exceeded, often on very public stages. People with a vested interest in professional football rationalize excessive violence in this structured space, as well as the ones that encompass college, high school and peewee play, all because they assume that rules, equipment, and regulations exist to prevent death. But this is false protection. While this form of entertainment has been normalized, Hamlin’s injury demonstrates that ordinary violence has potentially deadly consequences, and highlights how Black men’s athletic labor sustains this brutal system.

On these playing fields, ones that sociologist Billy Hawkins would argue are never theoretically far from plantation fields, financial stakeholders value Black bodies for their productive potential and physical prowess. The league encourages and facilitates rigorous training and disciplining so players can execute seemingly impossible corporeal demands all in the service of entertainment, money-making, and insatiable fandom. In the words of sociologist and activist Harry Edwards, “like a piece of equipment, the black athlete is used.” While I am not aware of research that compares the rate of injury between Black and white football players, heatstrokes, ACL and labrum tears, ankle sprains, bone breaks, and concussions are just a few of the consequences of how these bodies are used."

The gridiron is the "plantation field"

First off, no where in the article does it say “football is racist”

Secondly, the article is noted as “an opinion and analysis article”

Third, how is the article wrong, making point “football’s violence disproportionately affects Black men” when the majority of players in the NFL are black

And you though you had a real gotcha moment

Football uses young men as meat missiles

It destroys lives

I understand people love to watch football

That does not make it something that should just continue

Football needs to change

Period

I have no idea if they can change enough to make it reasonable and able to survive

But it needs to change

Racist birds, racist roads, racist healthy diets , racist math, racist trees, racist fields, racist babies.. Why not football? I think the author makes a good case.
Besides triggered59 already ate a very good thread on why it’s racist to show love and support for Hamlin. This somewhat reinforces it.

Once again, no where in the article did it say football was racist

I think maybe you are taking all those “opinion and analysis articles” too seriously

Why does it "need" to change?

So referring to the gridiron as being akin to "plantation fields" is not suggesting football is racist???? People have argued that the word "field" is racist. You people are amazing gymnasts

Quote us in the article where the “opinion” writer states “football is racist,” as you claimed they did

I loathe retards

"highlights how Black men’s athletic labor sustains this brutal system"

the article injected race where it was not needed.

"On these playing fields, ones that sociologist Billy Hawkins would argue are never theoretically far from plantation fields,..."

So isn’t that true, isn’t the vast majority of NFL players black, and these black players keep the game going

"On these playing fields, ones that sociologist Billy Hawkins would argue are never theoretically far from plantation fields,..."

the NFL was most certainly a racist organization - the sport thrived even though it expressly forbid black athletes from participating in the labor pool between 1933 and 1946.

the brutal system got no more brutal by stopping that racist edict - and that is why this article is idiotic

No, it isn't true. The interest in the game exists regardless of racial makeup. It is the ultimate meritocracy, but it was sustainable in other forms

Right, take out all the black players and you’d have a version comparable to High School football, that would pack them in on Sunday afternoon

Pre TV, one platoon football, not who it’s the product put on every Saturday afternoon

Football was one of those things that helped relieve racist views of White people about Black people.

When Jim Brown started running through defenses like a bullet, people started sayin, You know these Black people are pretty good athletes.

Jim Brown went on to becoming a top Box Office attraction and great Western Movie Star! That was unheard of before football changed things for the better good.

His Westerns are some of my favorites!

White people found another way to use them.
White man pay black man to run fast . Not fast enough, no more pay.
