Official temporary changes to the Catholic Mass
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the World Health Organization, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta have issued notices regarding the flu. Our concern is for the care, health and well-being of all. Because we respect life, we must take preventive measures. Immediate steps should be taken to minimize spreading of germs (reducing contact and increasing hygiene.) Therefore, I issue the following guidelines to be implemented immediately:
To reduce contact and increase hygiene, I direct the following temporary measures at Mass and other Sacraments:
1) Please do not shake hands during times of greetings prior to or after Mass.
2) The faithful are encouraged to not hold hands during the reciting of the Our Father.
3) The Sign of Peace shall be given without touching hands or kissing. This can be done with meaningful eye contact, smiles, or a bow of the head in reverence to one another.
4) All Ministers of Holy Communion shall wash their hands before and after the distribution of Holy Communion. This can be done in the work sacristy.
5) I direct a temporary suspension of the reception of the Most Precious Blood during Holy Communion. Communion is only to be given in the species of the consecrated bread.
6) The Presider shall be the only one who will receive the Precious Blood. He will use the main chalice and shall not offer it to Concelebrant Priests, assisting Deacons, or other ministers present at the sanctuary. If Concelebrants (priests) are present, a separate chalice will be prepared for them, and then only by Intinction will they receive the Precious Blood.
7) The faithful shall be encouraged to receive Communion in their hands, not on their tongue. Exceptions can be made for persons with strong personal reasons. A provision shall be made by the Pastor for persons with Celiac disease who can only receive Communion from the cup.
8) Non-communicants coming forward for a blessing during Communion shall not be touched.
These steps had been implemented upon the advice of competent medical authorities, or at the discretion of the Pastor, or by directive of the Bishop’s Office.
