One day we will wake to his obituary :-)

California Governor Gavin Newsom tore into the Republican Party on Wednesday after a shooting that killed two children and injured 17 others, including 14 children, at a Minneapolis church.

Newsom called Republicans "sick" in a social media post and accused the party of doing "absolutely nothing" to curb gun violence across the country.

Why It Matters

Wednesday's is the latest in a spate of mass shootings that have taken place across the country this year. A mass shooting is defined as an attack that kills four or more people, not including the shooter. There have been at least 286 mass shooting in the U.S. as of Wednesday, according to data compiled by CNN and the Gun Violence Archive.

The suspect in Wednesday's shooting fired a rifle through the windows of Annunciation Catholic Church while students were attending their first Mass of the new school year. The shooting killed an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old who were sitting in the pews, police said.

What To Know

"We cannot even make it through the first week of school without mass shootings," Newsom wrote on X. "And the @GOP will continue to do absolutely nothing while our kids are being gunned down. This is sick."

Zach Parkinson, the communications director for the Republican National Committee, responded to Newsom's post, telling Newsweek in a statement: "Children are dead, and the only thing this psychopath can think about is how to politicize it to advance his career. Gavin Newsom isn't only a horrible governor, he's a vile human being."

The California governor, considered a possible 2028 Democratic presidential contender and one of President Donald Trump's most vocal critics, joined other Democratic officials in calling for more government action to prevent mass shootings.

"Don't just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said at a news conference after the shooting. "These kids were literally praying. It was the first week of school. They were in a church."

"Prayer is not freaking enough. Prayers does not end school shootings," MSNBC host and former Biden White House press secretary Jen Psaki wrote on X. "[P]rayers do not make parents feel safe sending their kids to school. Prayer does not bring these kids back. Enough with the thoughts and prayers."

The suspect in Wednesday's shooting was identified by the Minnesota Star Tribune as 23-year-old Robin Westman, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after carrying out the attack on Annunciation Catholic Church.

According to the Tribune, Westman's mother once worked at the church and was commended for her "wonderful hospitality" in a 2021 Facebook post from the church announcing her departure.

President Donald Trump and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the former Democratic vice presidential nominee, spoke by phone following the shooting, a source told the Tribune.

"I'm praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence," Walz wrote on social media.

"I have been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota," Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday afternoon. "The FBI quickly responded and they are on the scene. The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!"

The president also issued a proclamation ordering that all flags be flown at half-staff at the White House, public buildings and grounds and military sites until sunset on August 31.

What People Are Saying

Democratic Representative Mary Gay Scanlon of Pennsylvania wrote on X: "Today, a mass shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis took the lives of two innocent children and injured 17 others. The pain felt by their loved ones, their community, and the country is immeasurable. Gun violence like this is a uniquely American epidemic that we must end with more than thoughts and prayers."

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X: "The FBI is investigating this shooting as an act of domestic terrorism and hate crime targeting Catholics. There were 2 fatalities, an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old. In addition, 14 children and 3 adults were injured. The shooter has been identified as Robin Westman, a male born as Robert Westman.

What Happens Next

Patel said the FBI's investigation into the shooting is ongoing and that the bureau will continue providing updates as they come.
