This July Fourth, that sacred day when we commemorate the hijacking of the American continent by a gang of white supremacists in a desperate bid to hold onto their slaves, I have a question for progressives: What do you want this country to be?

I understand the many frustrations with its flaws.

We all have those.

I understand anger at the myriad inequalities and injustices.

The work of progress is never even close to complete.

But is there anything that would actually make you love this country?

Do you understand why so many people—not only in America—admire it?

Ben Rhodes, a former Obama White House official, captures the progressive’s lament on glimpsing the American flag these last few years. “I’d look at the flag that once stirred such emotion in me and feel absolutely nothing,” he writes.

Perhaps in Rhodes’s case, like Michelle Obama’s , you’ve reached the point where you can be proud of your country only when your boss or someone in your immediate family is running it.

That doesn’t sound like America to me. It sounds more like a hereditary monarchy.

But what about all those others who seem to despise everything this country stands for even now that the people they like are in charge, like most of our academics, the staff who run HR departments for big American companies, the prime-time hosts on CNN?

I wonder in particular what sort of country they imagine would be better than this one.

Until 1970, Dems would occasionally love America (roughly 1829-60, the two Cleveland administrations, 1913-21, 1930-1969). Since then, however, they don't even particularly care for America when they do get power.

The left is fond of saying we need an honest discussion about race in America but that debate never seems to include an honest discussion about black behavior. Obama bin laden did a great job opening this divide that we presently see in America. Everything is seen through the lens of race. The only America the left will love will be the one that they utterly destroy. They have never cared about America or it's people they only care about control.

rev. wright was not a democratic leader. an ex-marine, a navy medic, and his own man. what he said about God Damn America was his opinion about how all our years of propping up asshole dictators in saudi and the middle east, who got fabulously rich, but were tyrants to their own people, led to terrorists from those countries blaming us for their oppression and 9/11 was a REACTION to our actions. get it, stupid fuck? isn't that in the Bible- you reap what you sow? doesn't mean he condoned their actions, just that he believed that was their reason for such hate against us.

as far as hating america, what party wearing trump hats and waving trump flags recently tried to overthrow an election, deny the prime American ideal of the people choosing who shall lead, attacking cops, attacking our Capitol, threatening congressmen, chanting Hang Mike Pence?

and like a chickenshit you try to point a finger at democrats, you piece of shit?

The Democrat party is the party of the DEVIL, and of the BEAST, and of everything that's EVIL.

I love this country because of its ideals. The ideals if the founders are what make this country great.

The connection between wanting to make it better, and hating it is lazy. Just because there are criticism doesn't mean there isn't love.

I would ask, how can Republicans claim to love this country right now. They believe the election was a fraud and deny the violence of January 6. They demanded and conducted multiple investigations into Bengazi but refuse to demand the same over an attack on America. Of course, who committed that attack???

Fyi, I believe the vast majority of Americans love this country. The behavior and words that suggest differently are often said when angry and don't represent the majority of either political party.

However, when we want love to look and sound a certain way we appear foolish. Every one of my friends who are married have a different look of how they love their spouse. Each relationship is unique. Each individual has its own relationship with this country based in their own experiences. Patriotism is as diverse as the US population.

Finally, my biggest concern is the hatred displayed between Americans. The difference of opinion should be celebrated and respected not ridiculed and feared.

I'd NEVER EVER vote for ANY Democrat, cause the Democrat party is the party of the DEVIL, and of the BEAST, and of everything that's EVIL.
50%+ of Americans voted for a Democrat in 6/8 presidential elections.

You have a pretty hate-filled opinion of the majority of Americans.

This is largely correct. The Democrat party follows the teachings of the character of Satan...in other words, compulsion.
Christ teaches freedom of choice, and methods to increase that freedom of choice. In other words, liberty.

We are free to choose, thanks to Christ and God. We are NOT free of the consequences of that choice.
Satan's basic messages since the beginning has always been compulsion. No choice. It is also what the Democrats want. They want fascism. They want communism. They want theft of wealth. They want to lord over people, not for gain, except for themselves.

Not when that difference of opinion results in Democrats overthrowing the federal government (so far successfully), cancelling even the Constitution of the United States itself as well as all State constitutions, and placing themselves in elitism, claiming to be the 'enlightened' ones.
The election faulted. It never took place. It was caused by Democrats. At least seven States never even chose electors. Biden did not win the election, for the election never took place. He was installed as part of a Democrat coup.
The violence of Jan 6 was by Democrats. It was Antifa and BLM attacking cops and many people in the crowd. It was Democrats that let the 'insurrectionists' into the Capitol building.
It is Democrats that fund and support Antifa and BLM, two violent factions that are still burning, looting, and pillaging cities.
