Don't get mugged.
It's not that bad. I have yet to feel unsafe there. I don't know... Tampa had, maybe still has, a very high per capita crime rate. Probably, from all the damn NYers that keep moving down here. 
Also, we spent most of our time in Manhattan, which is great and maybe safer than the other boroughs.
We did get to Brooklyn on Saturday and Sunday. It was a little bit more like what I imagined NYC to be, e.g., it was filthy, at least, in Sheepshead Bay and the people were a bit rude. I wanted to honk my horn just for the when in Rome sorta thing. Still not too bad.
