I'm not real sure whites whose ancestry is from Europe want to be called European Americans. One of the more common answers I read during a Google search was to the effect of:
White Americans can more easily and accurately trace their heritage to where their ancestors came from while those using the (fill in the blank)-American can't do so as easily or at all in many cases.
While I have been to many of the places in Europe where I can trace my ancestors on both sides of the family, am proud of my Eastern AND Western European heritage, and can only speak for myself, I have no desire to be called a hyphenated American. I'm an American.
