GOP leaders and most house republicans are cowards

The long-anticipated fulfillment of Representative Darrell Issa's (R-CA, and Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee) threat to charge Attorney General Eric Holder with contempt of Congress, in response to the willful refusal of the Department of Justice to comply with subpoenas issued in the "Project Gunwalker" investigation, appears to alternate between imminent, and doomed to not happen at all.

Sometimes these oscillations occur remarkably quickly, with Politico reporting Monday "GOP closer to holding Eric Holder in contempt," and The Hill one day later speculating that "Rep. Issa might not have the votes to push forward Holder contempt charge."

Central in most theories about why contempt charges will never get off the ground is that Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) is personally applying the brakes behind the scenes, for (possibly sordid) reasons of his own. About a week and a half ago, Roll Call voiced a perhaps even more perverse possible explanation for GOP officials' reluctance to pursue the contempt charges:

A GOP aide also warned against a racial backlash if Republicans are seen as unfairly targeting the first black attorney general, who is serving under the first black president. “Especially after Trayvon,” the aide said, referring to slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

They (the GOP leadership) don't think that they will suffer for failure to follow through. They're scared of Holder's race card. . . they're scared of Trayvon.
